Roy Hodgson has done the correct thing. Guus for England Manager, maybe?
To put England's effort in perspective for Collingwood fans, losing to Iceland in soccer is like, say, losing to St Kilda, Carlton and Melbourne (twice) in the one season. You know - absolutely unimaginable. |

Doubt they will pick an non-english gaffer but either way, they don't really have the talent to challenge the elite teams such as Spain, Germany, Italy, France and Iceland. _________________ kill for collingwood! |

You'd think after 50 years they would realise the only formula for success is to load the team with West Ham players. |

Nothing like a good England capitulation!
Excellent win by Iceland and great to see Italy win as well. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

This is the 14th time England has contested the European Championships. Twice they've made the semis and never the final.
Similar in the World Cup, 16 goes at it with one win and one other semi.
They really aren't that good.
30 major tournaments for one final.
But I do feel for them, the home of the game and the terrific EPL....but they never (1966 besides) produce the goods.
A middle ranking European nation at best, albeit with a fantastic league. |

Well, we have a couple of days off before the quarter finals, so I thought it time we were a little reflective. I decided to review Italy's lineup and see what changes they should make, if they are to get to the Final.
Conte is a fine tactical manager but I think his Italy needs an injection of talent to be competitive. This is the starting lineup I would like to see take the field in the quarterfinal:
Zoff
Baresi
Nesta
Maldini
Cannavaro
Tardelli
Mazzolo
Rivera
Baggio
Rossi
Meazza
Subs: Bergomi, Totti, Donadoni (or Conte himself, if the Manager feels he has the legs to run as a defensive mid for the last few minutes).
This team should be able to overcome any and all opposition, save for Iceland's Vikings - Baresi will, of course, mark Thor out of the game but I am a little concerned that Cannavaro will lack the physical strength neccesary to keep Odin quiet.
Thoughts? |

They struggled badly with their passing game. I hear that Favre has offered to come out of retirement to help out. |

Unless I read it wrong it appears that one side of the Quarters comprises Poland, Portugal, Belgium & Wales. So that means one of them will make their first ever major final. That's great - good to see a bit of change up.
The heavy hitters of France, Italy & Germany together with the Norse Gods are in the other side of the draw.
Of the top half; Poland & Belgium. From the other; France & Germany.....but beware those Norseman!! |

^ That's right. Ronaldo might make a major final without facing the might of Iceland.
It's Poland v Portugal and Belgium v Wales (winners to play in one semi) and, on the other side of the draw, Italy v Germany for the right to take on Iceland (who will smite France) in the other semi.
I'm hoping for a Wales v Iceland Final. That'd be an appropriate reward for UEFA contriving to organise a competition in which the Dutch could fail to qualify. |

I expect Belgium to make the final! They're a star-studded team.
On the other side of the draw, it's hard to say. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

1 magnificent strike apiece sees Poland (Lewandoski) and Portugal (Sanches) 1-all at halftime in the first quarter-final. |
