I don't think Serie A has been the same since the match-fixing scandals in the mid 2000s.

You may be right, I haven't followed it closely enough to give you a reasonable answer.

That's what they said after the second round of famous Italian betting scandals in the late 70s. Then Rossi scored a hat-trick against Brazil and Italy won the World Cup - and that was that, scandal forgotten. It's the money that generally determines where the best league is (except in England, where, no matter how much money they have, they never seem to buy competent defenders, so that it's hard to watch for long without giggling).

Lift off! Germany v Italy is underway. Germany, yet to concede a goal at Euro 2016, has never beaten Italy at a major tournament. Something has got to give.

15 minutes gone. Nil-all. Khedira is broken and has been subbed out. Schweinsteiger is on.

So it is nil-all at the main break (and will likely be nil-all at the next three breaks). Schweinsteiger had a headed goal disallowed for a foul.

Ozil has scored for Germany after 65 minutes. With two teams so defensively capable, you'd think that's the game winner, right there - there won't be too many chances for Italy to get that back in the next 25 minutes.

Well there you go! Italy equalise after 77 minutes. Penalty well taken by Bonnucci after an obvious handball in the area by Boateng.

Gomez, the architect of Germany's goal, is subbed out with an injury. Italy on top for the time being.

So, penalties it is. Since whoever gets through is going to lose 73:0 to Iceland, it's probably not quite as intense as it might have been if either team were a real chance of wining the semi-final.

Italy go first and score.

Zaza and Muller both miss, then Italy goes ahead 2:1.
