Germany win 6:5 on penalties and earn the right to lose to Iceland in the semi.

Here's the lyrics for the song - written in Reykjavik around the 22nd of June 1970 and debuted at the Bath Festival the following weekend - that will, no doubt, be adopted shortly as the unofficial Euro 2016 anthem:

"We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.
Hammer of the gods, will drive our ships to new land.
To fight the hordes, and sing and cry.
Valhalla I am coming.

Always sweep with, with threshing oar.
Our only goal will be the western shore.

We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.
How soft your fields so green. Can whisper tales of gore.
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your over Lords.

Always sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you'd better stop, and rebuild all your ruins.
For peace and trust can win the day, despite of all your losing."

Not, perhaps, true Viking Metal - but certainly one of the greatest starts to an album, ever, from one of the greatest rock albums ever made.

I should add that the line "Our only goal ..." will need to be modified to "Amongst our many goals ..." (I picture it being voiced-over by Michael Palin).

One of the messiest set of penalty shots I've ever seen. Ironically, it seems the only way Germany could beat it's great nemesis, Italy was through the Italians' own nemesis, the penalty shoot out. A tactically brilliant and well drilled team but not great on individual talent, it was Italy's final undoing. Also ironic that their most talented individual, Buffon was to let through a very save able goal that sealed the deal in the end.

Bad luck to the Italians, but at least this paves way for Antonio Conte to finally join Chelsea Very Happy

France and Iceland are drawing 1-all in the last few minutes, after Iceland lulled France into a false sense of security by allowing them to kick 4 early goals. France will struggle to hold this lead, now.

The fear has got to Payet. He has been subbed out, quaking in fright.

Iceland has scored again. They now lead the second half 2:1 and have just introduced their secret weapon, Gudjohnsen.

So, what are the tournament rules? If teams win a half each does the game go to extra time?

There it is. Germany, Wales and Portugal will not face the Viking Might.

France 5, Iceland 2. Iceland has the 2 away goals to take into the second leg.

Well done Iceland! It's been a memorable tournament and they should be proud of their achievements to get this far.
