20 consecutive maidens!
At least Nevill and O'Keefe aren't going to throw their wickets away. New ball taken. Rain not started, just yet. |

Nevill made 9 from 115 balls. Pity the top order didn't apply itself in that way. |

2 full days (rain allowing) left.
Mendis had a Test average of 33 ?
The Aussies have Voges (ave. 92), Smith (60), Warner and Khawaja (both a touch under 50) and Burns (47).
Doesn't mean they'll win but I am wondering, why the pessimism, mate ? |
There's your answer, Donny. A pitiful second-innings batting performance. Yet again. |

Yet again ? Gotta wonder how they got to #1 in Test cricket.
An answer, at the time, would've had some relevance. _________________ Donny.

It wasn't about winning a test, generally, or being good enough to be #1 in the world, Donny. The task was more confined: make 200 in sub-continental conditions in the 4th innings of a test match to win.
How many times has Australia done that in its Test history, I wonder?
http://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Records/Australia/Test/Team/Highest_Fourth_Innings_Totals_To_Win.html
At a quick glance, the answer appears to be once, against Bangladesh a decade ago, with a top-order boasting Hayden, Hussey, Ponting, Martyn, Clarke and Gilchrist - you can say whatever you like about averages but the present top order isn't that top order.
In fact, looking at the final total Australia had to chase, they've run down 268 or more only 15 times in Test history.
I suppose one could say that the task doesn't arise that often for a "dominant" country but, at the same time, we know that Australia has a history of dodgy fourth-innings run-chases. That's why we get so nervous when Australia bats second and doesn't build a big lead. It's also why we were so impressed by Gilchrist and Langer in Hobart - that was remarkable and - although we hoped for it - totally unexpected. |

Given that, if you include visits by England, Windies, Sth Africa and NZ, to the sub continent, how do the stats compare - re. 4th. innings chases ? _________________ Donny.

I might be an old stubborn bloody mule but I still stand by what I wrote on Friday afternoon that around 260 was a gettable score. It should have been reached in my humble view.
Congrats to Sri Lanka but geez, it will be nice if they can stop bloody depending on just one or two batsman all the time like they did with Sanga and Mahela. If they are to improve in test cricket, the other batsmen must do what they are chosen to do, score runs.
As for the Aussies, I think they will learn from this defeat and put up a much better performance in Galle. Where they actually lost this test was not their batting in the second innings but their very ordinary batting in the first innings when a lead of around 300 was in the begging.
However knowing the SL conditions as I do, especially in Galle, I think the Aussie selectors have made a monumental mistake by not picking a leggie such as Farwad Ahmed who would have been FAR more effective than Jon Holland. _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination.
