After fierce debate who has been our greatest USA Ruckman so far.
The friendly journeyman Shae Mcnamara? Or the Lean Mean Texan Mason Cox? _________________ " Ohhh Banksy and out comes the Note Book".

Now Cmon Tonna the sugar man was a great foil up forward in a NAB cup game , along with JYE Bolton. _________________ " Ohhh Banksy and out comes the Note Book".

To borrow the words of another great American sportsman (on the Tennis Court at least) - 'You cannot be serious!!!'
Both were/are American Pies...
Like the movie of the same name, Shae was a joke...
However, like the Don McLean song, Mason is solid gold (platinum even!). |

Nothing we didn't already know.
Anyway, comparing Shae and mason is an interesting exercise.
Similar age and background, both very agile for their size, both picked up the basic disposal skills pretty quickly. That's about where it ends though.
Cox is more physical and intense. He looks like he's driven to succeed and is comfortable putting his body on the line.
The other thing Cox has is something you can't teach, for want of a better term I'll call it game sense. It comes out in his decision making when under pressure, the ability to squirt out a handpass from a pack, or a deft tap or block to put another player in position. Some people grow up playing Aussie Rules and never develop that, although they can master all the skills on the training track it's that ability to make split second good decisions under pressure.
I don't know what his ceiling is for development and improvement, but I reckon the more he plays the better he will get. He's a smart bloke and he'll learn, particularly how to deal with being mauled by full backs as he gets more attention, but if he can be a regular 2 goal a game plus a couple of assists player who provides a long target and creates a contest for the crumbers, he'll play 150 games.
So, sorry Shae, but you've been seriously overshadowed by the big Cox.. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Shae was definitely the best American ruckman to never pull the Collingwood jumper on in the seniors! He also wrote a book! SNAP _________________ McRae for Governor-General! |

As Adam Treloar said then on AFL tonight "I'm a massive Cox fan".
Hmm. |

Shae was at the club at the wrong time imo.
His first year was a premiership year, followed by 2011 which saw us reach the GF. In both those years we had little injury or form issues with our taller players. The same in 2012, where we got to the PF.
Shae was too far down in the pecking order with age not on his side. The Hawks made him an offer and then went for Ceglar instead. Many VFL teams made him an offer, but he decided to try Basketball and eventually returned to the U.S.
I think Shae could have played up to 50 games of AFL, and possible could have seen some time if he were at a different club, or if we had injury concerns. His window just didnt open at Collingwood. And I think he may have done the wrong thing by not trying out for a new club, AFL or VFL.
But you'd still have to take Cox as he has now played AFL, and has so far played well.
Shae could have been like Cox right now, who knows, perhaps even better. But Cox got his chance, took it, and has got some early runs on the board. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Shae did alright for himself, many will come over and not get to the same level he achieved, Hawks were seriously considering picking him up after we cut him. _________________ Defender...........
