For anyone playing Buckley cliche bingo out there, from our twitter feed

Quote:
“We were smashed in the stoppages, + it cost us,” (we lost clearances 30-42) - Bucks #gopies

Alas, we have to take "smashed" and not "nutted" on the official scorecard

Let's be honest, everything had to go right for us to be anywhere near it today, but despite the fact not much went right we were a realistic show at 3/4 time.

I thought Smith was excellent early against the tide, but his lack of experience showed as the game wore on and he was exposed for a lack of composure.

Whilst Naitanui clearly influenced the game in the first and last quarters, Grundy was fantastic in the middle part of the game. He's going to be the best ruckman in the comp by the time he's developed the strength to compete body on body with the big blokes.
Cox was out of his depth in the ruck, but he competed hard, had a crack, and also had an impact when he went forward. Clearly a quick learner, impressed with his ticker as well so far.
Naitanui too good overall for both though today.

I think Nathan Brown is a valuable player against certain types of forwards, but geez if he dishes up many more games like today he won't get too many more chances to show it. Constantly out of position and too easily out-positioned when starting even. Terrible today Browny.

Blair good all day, both when things were going for us and against us.
(Maybe went missing a little in the last qtr, but he has 21 mates.)

Oxley I wasn't sold on and am probably still not, but he's been a guy that has played his best footy when things are going against the team. I like that. I hope he kicks on.

I'd like to think they'll review the game honestly and point out the mistakes as you do, but put a great deal of emphasis on the positives this week in particular. There were plenty of them despite the obvious negatives.

Snap. Plenty of positive signs there if you're prepared to see them.

Good post mate. I've looked for you a few times at games, you aren't in your usual spot anymore?

In a nutshell we have quarters where our game looks really good. But for long periods every week we just stop and the opposition have no opposition. When we stop putting in we are ridiculously easy to score against. For more than half of most of our games we zone off and put no pressure on any possession. It must be like Christmas for other teams. They must be asking themselves 'how come Collingwood players run away from the ball and us and let us take the ball end to end without going near us?'

Yep, I actually thought there were some positives. We matched them for half the game and had some good passages of play. This, given that we had 7 players under 25 games, no Varcoe, Adams, Elliott or Swan, playing interstate on a home ground fortress, against last year's runners up and off a six day break.
I think some perspective is needed.

Don't be sensible. This is not the time nor the place. We are building an excellent team, all the Debbie Downers will have nothing to say when this batch of Pies have played enough footy together and start dominating. Its losses like this one, away, that build character and resolve.

Spanked early because of inferior skills. When we looked to go forward they preyed on the turnover after we coughed it up. In the same situations going forward they found each other with precision and hit the scoreboard. Summed up when Cox has a shot for goal and misses and they go coast to coast for a goal and the deficit is +5 goals rather than -4. The final result could have been the margin at half time if for their inaccurate kicking for goal.
Very pleasing to see us work back into the game later in the second and most of the third. The door was still ajar as the last quarter started but those couple of slips on the carpet leading to that goal showed up the brittleness of the side. Need a few replacements as key big men both forward and back. Not sure we have them on the list at the mo...

Thankfully I don't have Foxtel, so I didn't see any of the game today. But I did watch the Scum v Essendope game. If we were able to serve it up to the Eagles for 2 quarters, we shouldn't have too many problems next week.

I thought it was hilarious. Benny Hill stuff in stages. These days, I just sit back and grab a few beers and some chips, and just laugh at what we've become as a club since we won the Premiership. I don't think any club did what we have done in such a short period; dismantled a Premiership winning team and gone this far south that we've embarrassed ourselves and are the laughing stock of the AFL. Very sad. And funny. I can't take this seriously. It's a comic tragedy.

Two horrible quarters but at the end of the day I never expected to win, although I did get a bit excited in the third. The Eagles are a very different side on their home turf.

Anyway i'm trying to stay with the positives, for me the return of Jack Crisp what a great game. He was okay last week too, so hoping he's back to his 2015 form.

I also really liked Maynards game, Grundy good, Josh Smith gets plenty of it and unfortunately his couple of clangers/errors were costly. I still say we keep playing him. Injury in the first NAB game so he's probably only played 2 VFL and now 2 AFL games.

Someone mentioned here a Cox Cloke combo, I think it's time we have a look at it. Darcy needs a spell.

Lets face it, the weagles are just flat track bullies at home, they are a six goal better team on that perth dunghill, get em in Melb and they shit their pants. It was good at least to fight back too within ten points, then a couple of lucky incidents went their way, and away they went. Not many, if any, teams will win against the eagles there, they play it so well, and i felt if we had varcoe, elliott and swan in the team today, we could have really pushed them, they do have a lot of senior guys too, with great experience over us. Cool

This

There's no alternative. You have to play zone defense, everyone does players are no longer in fixed positions so man on man is really not possible. We need to get better at it and you don't do that by not playing it.

Yep this.

I think Pendles was injured. He spent the last 8 minutes of the game on the bench with his tracksuit top on.
We looked great in the 3rd at the ground. But the game plan/zone just seems to fall apart for long stretches.
Brown was very poor and gave away free kicks when Kennedy was out of position.
