I posted a question about this a while back and got no response, I also asked about "knocking up getting kicks", but again, muffin'. Hopefully you'll do better, (and hopefully we'll get lots of both on Sunday!!)

A bigfooty thread suggested it might be rhyming slang for "the man loose", which seems plausible. The kind of thing Rex Hunt would probably have come up with.

Perhaps this?

A Joe the Goose is a handball over the top of an opponent’s flailing [aka flapping like a goose] arms to a teammate who is standing on his own in the goal square. The teammate then casually turns around and pops it through for the easiest of goals.

nah, rhyming is usually cleverer and less subtle. For those who don't know it's an expression the commentators use when the ball is passed to a loose man on his own in the square. It isn't totally clear whether it refers to the pass or the loose man, I don't believe all the commentators know either.

Makes sense that it might reference an australian artwork of the 50s, the naming seems way too coincidental

The reference to '50's Australia, and referring to someone behaving foolishly or wildly as a "Goose" is spot on, but why 'Joe'? That Walker print is fairly obscure AFAIK. If it were an iconic image, say used in an advertisement, the story would be complete, but otherwise the reference to this particular 'Joe' is a bit thin. Does this print reference a previous "Joe the Goose"? Something from a Banjo Patterson Poem or Lawson story?
Don't think it's quite explained yet, but good work!!

Pretty much....as much as I respect the intellect and historical knowledge of that broad church known as the Nicks Community, I gave Professor Google a shot before consulting here Laughing
