A bigfooty thread suggested it might be rhyming slang for "the man loose", which seems plausible. The kind of thing Rex Hunt would probably have come up with.

Sounds about right; thanks

Perhaps this?

A Joe the Goose is a handball over the top of an opponent’s flailing [aka flapping like a goose] arms to a teammate who is standing on his own in the goal square. The teammate then casually turns around and pops it through for the easiest of goals.

Saw that to on Google (the arm flapping that is)....seemed a little bit clever for a football cliche....I'd back Davids call if I were a betting man.

The artwork was pretty cool too

Thanks everyone for the input though, much appreciated

I call BS on the call though, Port Lincoln?

Half arsed rhyming slang would seem more likely....quintessentially Australian

Yep, considering that was posted by a page called 'Troll AFL' and the Tweets came from an account called 'Not Damian Barrett', and the Port Lincoln Magpies apparently don't exist, I'm guessing BT and co. may have been hoaxed. Laughing

Well hoaxes can be hard to spot if your not looking.

Oh you mean how Jarryd Roughead has got around 33% of his goals

Wow, I asked this question a year or so ago and got FA response! It really does seem like no one knows the answer with any degree of certainty! We shall continue searching! Maybe someone can ask Mcavaney or Commetti, I do believe it might have been the silver combover who first used it that I heard.

And what about "knocked up getting the footy"?

Does no one have an answer? A theory even?

I first heard it used by Dermie.
Another term used which doesn't make sense is, ' the players are out on their feet'. Of course they are out on their bloody feet.

Boxing phrase, as in a boxer so badly beat he is semiconscious but still standing ( and generally copping a flogging)
