I think I may have been snapped in a roadworks zone a few weeks ago, but we haven't updated our registration address yet (it's going to be a pain; because we're also transferring ownership we're also going to have to do a roadworthy, hence why we've been putting it off) so any fines aren't going to be turning up in our mailbox.

I've never had a speeding fine before, so will almost certainly be able to get out of it, but I can't do that if I haven't received any of the documentation. Does anyone know if there's some way to ring up or check online and see if you have any fines outstanding?

Not sure why you think you will get out of it!

But yes Google VicRoads demerit points, not sure if you can do it on line but you can ring up and get an automated service that will tell you.

Thanks TP. My understanding is that Victoria Police have a general grace policy for speeding fines if it's a first offence and you write to them (unfortunately local councils are less generous, as I found out that time I parked in a clearway on Johnston Street... Evil or Very Mad).

Should be able to get out of it, just write a decent explanation. Mum just "got out" of one (that she took for me) - her only issue is that she now won't get the discount on her licence renewal (which apparently you get if you have no fines for X amount of years).

In regards to finding out if you have a fine, you could try Civic Compliance, they issue them, their number is 0392008111. They have got info on their website but to find out details about a fine, you have to have the obligation number, which you obviously don't have.

One way to find out is just to go and keep driving at 135km/h straight through a camera-zone in the city - they'll eventually send a policeman/woman out to discuss the situation with you and you could ask them.

Or do what Pies4Shaw would do.

Wait for the bill in the mail, make his driver take the blame then sack him. Wink

I got out of my first fine. You basically have to grovel, but its worth it. It also depends how much over you were.

Officer in Charge
Traffic Camera Office
GPO Box 1916
Melbourne 3001

Dear Officer in Charge,

I am writing in relation to traffic offence xxx committed at [time] on [date].

I accept that at no time is speeding safe. In this case due to [insert brief comment on circumstances, don't give excuses] I drifted over the speed limit for a short period of time. I have now modified my driving behaviour and pay more attention to my speed in such circumstances.

Given my good driving record I would like to request a caution for this infringement.

Regards,
[Your name]

Thanks Wokko, that's awesome. Still not sure if I've actually got one, though (I'm guessing Lola's Dad will have to call up that number LD provided as the car is still registered in his name).

oh, well hang on, if the car's registered in his name, the fine will go to him & you don't need to worry about it (yet).

If he's quite old & a little senile just keep speeding & see if he realises it's not him & just pays them Wink Razz

Lol. I wish it were that easy! Unfortunately they've just moved interstate so he'd have no more idea if a fine has been sent than I have.

Of course I'm happy to take responsibility whether it means I end up having to pay it or get away with a warning, but I'd just rather not be getting surprising phone calls in five years' time to find that he's got an arrest warrant in his name and I'm going to have to take the rap. Razz

David, you will only qualify for an official warning if you were doing 10kph or less above the speed limit and you have a clean driving record for the past two years.

They changed the rules last September and have stopped issuing official warnings for speeds between 11-15kms over on the grounds of a good driving record alone. They will consider an official warning if special circumstances apply (you didn't have the capacity to understand you were breaking the law because of mental illness or a serious drug/alcohol addiction)

That bolded bit made me laugh.

Sorry Officer in Charge, I was so high on {insert drug of choice here} that I couldn't see the speed limit signs. Hell, I could barely see the lane markers, but please give me a warning & I'll be less high in the future.
