Both Nathan Freeman and Danny Roach (and to a lesser degree, Rustling) were most definitely the right selections at the time. Both fell to the intangible curse of injury which happens at ALL the clubs but we are only really interested in what happens at Collingwood for obvious reasons.

and who could forget Mr Edwards

This is the 1979 team that played Hawthorn that year when we drafted Butch Edwards

The team was as follows:

B. Stan Magro Peter McCormack… .Kevin Worthington
HB Andrew Ireland Billy Picken Terry Wight
C Mark Hannebery Ray Shaw Ray Byrne
HF Rene Kink Dennis Banks…… ……Graeme Anderson
F Craig Stewart Craig Davis Ron Wearmouth

R Peter Moore Russell Ohlsen
R Tony Shaw

Interchange: Mike Woolnough Bill Valli

Daicos was about to debut then

I did..... Embarassed Embarassed

And Lee Walker!!

However very stubbornly, I still reckon even the following players were most definitely the right selections at the time, although many here including my good mate Jackcass disagreed with getting Clinton Young.

Sam Kekovich
Chris Dalkin
Bradley Plain
Jamie Tape
Chad Rintoul
Tom Davidson
Blake Caracella
Brad Dick
Quinten Lynch
Clinton Young

Worth posting what magpie greg posted in 2008 about that game and us picking up Butch Edwards:

Collingwood v Hawthorn at Vic Park 1979, and a new recruit

It was Round 13 1979.

Collingwood was coming off its second humiliating defeat at the hands of Fitzroy for the season, one in which former Collingwood captain and star Max Richardson had shone and Bernie Quinlan a past, potential Magpie recruit had thrashed the Pies. This had followed a victory over Melbourne and a Queen’s Birthday week-end loss to Carlton when Stan Magro made the earth shake for Jezza.

The Magpies were now at home to Hawthorn, the team it was also scheduled to meet 3 days later in the Escort Cup Grand Final at VFL Park. Hawthorn was also the reigning premier.

The Pies had defeated Hawthorn earlier in the year at Princes Park when Rene Kink thrashed Peter Knights and Craig Davis had shown he would be a handy acquisition for the Magpies.

On this day, there were added problems for the Magpie fans as a major transport strike made it hard to get to the ground. But get there they did. The usual low percentage of Hawthorn fans could not even be distinguished in the sea of black and white which surrounded them.

For this game the Magpies had lost Derek Shaw due to glandular fever, and had dropped Geoff Austen (who was to star in the night grand final a few days later) along with a young Peter Daicos.

Into the team came Graeme Anderson for his first game since the 1977 GF Replay after having recovered from a knee operation. Also included strengthening the back line were Kevin Worthington and Andrew Ireland.

The team was as follows:

B. Stan Magro Peter McCormack… .Kevin Worthington
HB Andrew Ireland Billy Picken Terry Wight
C Mark Hannebery Ray Shaw Ray Byrne
HF Rene Kink Dennis Banks…… ……Graeme Anderson
F Craig Stewart Craig Davis Ron Wearmouth

R Peter Moore Russell Ohlsen
R Tony Shaw

Interchange: Mike Woolnough Bill Valli

The game loomed as a make or break game for the season for both teams who were fifth and sixth respectively. They both had had good days and bad days so far during the season and this game was seen as crucial to each teams’ hopes for the rest of the season.

For the Hawks, Don Scott had been suspended and Leigh Matthews was out with a broken bone in his hand. Knights and Russo had come in to replace them. Recent results had been very close, never more than a kick or two in it until the Pies win earlier that year by 5 goals.

From the first bounce, the Magpies booted home the first two goals in the first 5 minutes against a strong gale. It became very quickly apparent this would be an afternoon to remember and savor for Magpie fans.

Collingwood opened with 6 goals into the wind as opposed to 1 1 7 by the Hawks. So massive was the Magpie domination that the game started to take on the feeling of a practice match with the Pies leading 96-15 at half time after kicking 9 goals with the wind.

The third quarter was a quiet affair with two goals each but in the last the Pies belted a further 8 goals to 4 to the Hawks to run out the most comfortable of winners by 105 points.

The Pies dominated every position. Moore thrashed allcomers in the ruck, (best on ground.) Graeme Anderson marked his return to the big time with a 6 goal haul reliving memories of his first game in 77 v Essendon after a long period of injury when he kicked 8.

Rene Kink scared and terrorised the Hawk forward line again and Craig Davis snuck in for a lazy four goals himself. Dennis Banks ruled in the forward line as well as the 18 year old recruit showed how talented he was. So much did Collingwood dominate the game that even Kevin Worthington was able to drift up from the back pocket to boot two goals himself!.

Ray Shaw wreaked havoc in the midfield and McCormack Worthington and Ireland led the backline who let the Hawks score a paltry 8 16 64.

Collingwood had 44 scoring shots to the Hawks 24 for the day!

The Magpies played with devil and fire, enthusiasm persistence and aggression, the way most of us feel all good Collingwood teams should play.

Collingwood coach Tom Hafey said he hardly earned his pay cheque that week as the “boys were so enthusiastic, they were enthusing each other and jumping out of their skin”.

It had been a long time since the Hawks had taken a drubbing as they did at Victoria Park on this Saturday. The scores said a 105 point beating, however, the Hawks also trailed on all other counts including chasing and tackling. It was being proclaimed that the Hawthorn era had come to an end. Matthews, Scott, Knights, Moore, Martello, Tuck and Hendrie had supposedly run their race.

The Pies repeated the dose in the middle of the following week defeating the Hawks by 28 points to win the night premiership.

For those who bought the Monday newspapers to read of the Collingwood victory, they were also greeted with another Collingwood headline:- Edwards becomes a Magpie!

Richmond forward Alan Edwards had been cleared to Collingwood for $100,000 plus three Collingwood players. Rod Oborne and brothers Craig and Ross Considine. This was rushed through before clearance closed on June 30.

Rather startlingly, Richmond coach Tony Jewell said he was happy to see the back of Edwards who according to Jewell, had been nothing but trouble to Richmond. He said the Tigers tried to look after him but all he did was moan and groan and he was glad to see him go.

Conversely, Tom Hafey said the Magpies were tickled pink to pick up Edwards who was still only 21 years old. He said it isn’t everyday you can pick up a key forward who is only 21 and who has the ability that Edwards has.

The scores for the game were as follows:-

Collingwood v Hawthorn
6 0 36 1 1 7
15 6 96 2 3 15
17 13 115 4 13 37
25 19 169 8 16 64

Best: Peter Moore, Dennis Banks, Ray Shaw, Andrew Ireland, Kevin Worthington, Peter McCormack and Rene Kink.

Goals: Graeme Anderson 6, Craig Davis 4, Dennis Banks 3, Craig Stewart 3, Rene Kink 2, Peter Moore 2, Kevin Worthington 2, Ray Shaw, Russell Ohlsen, Ron Wearmouth.

It takes time to reverse all that mishandling. Saints are in the process of bulletproofing Freeman's body, he will have a long and decorated career.

I owe my name to magpie Greg. In 2007/2008 (we both posted on hotrods) and he kept banging on about the fact that we had no elite players coming through. I strongly disagreed, and to make a point, i changed by name to Elite Midfielders, which pissed him off no end.

Eventually i shortened it to elite and then to E.
