Hi Swoop. Thanks for bringing RR back safe and sound from Morwell; we feared that his trip to the local Red Rooster might be his last! _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Still shit and hopefully getting worse next year with the recruitment of Rhys Palmer and half the GWS reserves team.
Definitely noticed the irony of my username! _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

I don't know how this is relevant to anything, but several items, theatrical wise, have happened recently
First, Baz Luhrmann's attempt to make Shakespeare hip for the kids by driving a few nails through it, Romeo + Juliet, just turned 20. Quote: | Romeo + Juliet at 20: Baz Luhrmann's adaptation refuses to age -Guardian 2.11.16 Guy Lodge |
Second, the artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London has been let go, citing artistic differences in a scenario that echoes Eddie Mick and Bucks. Quote: | Emma Rice to step down as artistic director at Shakespeare's Globe
Theatre says it will return to shared light productions from April 2018 after Rices experimentation with lighting and sound -Guardian 26.10.16 Mark Brown |
Third, the BBC recently presented a modern Shakespeare version of the comedy Midsummer Nights Dream, with Duke Theseus portrayed as a fascist tyrant who torments his girlfriend, and the large bald guy from Little Britain, who just isn't funny, as Bottom. I turned it off after fifteen minutes.
Which leads us to the vexed question of modern Shakespeare. I tend to save my pennies and avoid these things like a Celine Dion concert. But those of us who are nostalgic for some decent theatre, particularly in Melbourne after the game, are left scratching their heads... |

Know exactly what you mean, RITF. Everyone wants to update the plays or add some gimmick. What if you just want to see a basic, faithful production of Hamlet or Julius Caesar? Trouble is, no-one would fund that because it's not cool or edgy enough.
I have never seen a decent, old-fashioned Shakespeare production at the theatre, and at this point I'm not sure i ever will. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
