I guess it would have to consist of Cloke, (of course) Moore, Howe, Varcoe, Elliott, and De Goey, with Swan having brief patches up there, resting, then theres big Yank Cox, and Gault, and ive probably over looked a couple, So, whats your ultimate forward line this season, one that could beat the likes of piss and poop, swans, freo etc ?

Thoughts ? Confused Smile

Swanny Moore Grundy/Witts (resting ruck)

Fasolo Cloke Elliott

I've only included Cloke on the condition that he stays beyond the 50 metre arc. I've yet to see Howe do anything, so I didn't consider him. If Bucks decides to go with just one ruckman (Witts or Grundy), then Gault would be next in line to slot in alongside Moore. De Goey will mainly play on the ball, and Varcoe's run and carry pencils him in as a winger or running off half back.

HF:Howe, Cloke, Varcoe

F:Elliott, Moore, Fasolo

Swan, Sidebottom, de Goey and Pendlebury to rotate with the 3 smalls.

Exactly on all points. Blair should be the interchange option with Broomhead as the emergency when one drops in form or gets injured. I can also see Treloar, Pendles, Greenwood, and others rested forward from the midfield group.
Ps forgot Howe!

hf; howe, cloke, gault
ff; elliot, moore, fasolo

lot's of marking power there. happy to rotate both rucks through the bench as don't think either of witts or grundy are dangerous enough as stay at home forwards.

That's as good a forward six I could come up with the exemption of Howe, who hasn't proved himself yet in the forward half (see what happens when he's uninjured).

Elliott Cloke Howe
Fasolo Moore Swan

Sidebottom replacing Swan when Swan goes into the middle. I picked Howe as I am hoping he can provide some elite marking as a third forward. Gault and Cox still developing and I'm hoping Broomy can become that clever crumbling forward.

I see Cloke, Elliott and Fasolo as the only certainties.

Swan will spend some time there, but I'm sure he'll play plenty of midfield as well. Howe's close to a certainty but will need to be given some time first.

The secondary talls are more interesting. Cloke's far and away our best tall, Reid easily our second best (though likely to play in defense), then we have Gault, Witts, Grundy, Moore and White.

Darcy has the most potential but is very young and probably won't demand a position every game (if he does, he's either a phenom, or I doubt we're pushing for top 4).

Gault's shown a bit over his career and is looking in good touch even if it's only the NAB Cup, will be interesting to see what sort of opportunity he gets.

White's the most credentialed forward of the lot and he'll still play plenty of senior footy this year, whether forward or back.

Witts and Grundy have shown very little as forwards at AFL level. I'm not even sure which is least bad. Witts is never going to be able to play major minutes at the position, he is too easily run off. Grundy can but needs to show massive improvement before he's a positive in the position.

I'm not considering Cox at this stage, he's not ready. Maybe he'll come into consideration in the second half of the year, but if we're going well he should at most only be getting one or two experimental showings.

Lots to choose from especially the big men
Small forwards from Fasolo Elliot Blair and resting mids like Sidey
Mid forwards Howe Goldsack Swan Varcoe
I expect the last two to play more time in the middle or wing
Talls Cloke then Moore Gault White Reid
Reid should play down back and White VFL
Witts and Grundy as resting rucks

Lots of choices and the forward line will change according to conditions
Have not included Cox as he still needs to prove himself in difficult conditions and needs to improve his ground work

Still have lots of resting mids to find a spot for
Gault has shown promise in the NAB before disappearing latter in the year

Although not yet proven with the Pies, what i really like about Howe is his huge leaps, a real X factor, he will have to be guarded closely by Opp defenders, you simply cannot leave him alone, and this takes away good defenders from Cloke, and others. My missus is related to the Melb team manager, and he told me recently he is spewing the Deees gave up Howe, so there ya go. !

i would be promoting Gault straight away. He showed a bit last year in the nab cup, but nothing like he has shown in the last 2 weeks, with a 5 goal haul in an intra club match before that, to boot.

so tall forwards are Gault, Moore and Cloke. Neither witts or grundy will give you much as a resting ruckman, so perhaps Cox should be the ruckman/forward option we need. He gets himself into a lot of marking contests, using his height to get first crack at the mark, just needs to hold onto a few.

other than that, we have

Elliot, Fasolo, Howe as specialist forwards, with any number of midfielders rotating thru for a 'rest'
