Post subject: Interesting circulation numbers from Morgans | |
|
I see that Roy Morgan has released new newspaper circulation figures. These are total audience reach figures for the major dailies, both print and on-line.
To my considerable surprise, in those markets where there is a choice, the Murdoch papers are taking a bath. Both the Age and the SMH are more read than the same-city Murdoch rags. I certainly didn't expect that.
4,087,000: Sydney Morning Herald
3,120,000: Daily Telegraph (Sydney)
2,860,000: The Age
2,837,000: Herald Sun
2,188,000: The Australian
2,077,000: Courier-Mail (Brisbane)
1,425,000: West Australian
1,270,000: Financial Review
1,217,000: Adelaide Advertiser
489,000: Canberra Times
306,000: Newcastle Herald
274,000: Mercury (Hobart)
^ Number of people reading each newspaper at least once a week. (Includes people reading on-line edition, print edition, or both - interestingly, a great many read both forms, possibly on different days though I'm only guessing that last bit. The Guardian was not listed: possibly because it doesn't have a print edition, possibly because Morgans generally take about a decade to adjust to something most normal organisations would get their minds around in a week or two.
The Murdoch domination of the press in Australia is slowly fading away, it seems. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

I wonder how much of an effect Fairfax's more accessible paywalls have had? I'd really want to see the breakdown of print vs online readership because up until recent times (from memory) the Murdoch tabloids were winning the print war against their Fairfax competitors on something like a 2:1 ratio.
But the most important fact is that all of the above are only going in one direction down.

I guess News.com.au isn't included in the digital as it isn't an actual newspaper but a news site same as the Guardian and the huff n puff post. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Thanks Jezza looks like my hypothesis about paywalls might be right. Hard to know how else to explain the discrepancy in figures. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I'll read the Aged online but I would never buy the paper version because it's crammed full of crap I have no interest in. Utter waste of paper. Online, I can cherrypick the bits I want to read and don't have half a rainforest left to throw in the bin afterwards. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

It's not surprising considering the rubbish the mainstream media dish up. Twitter feeds on news are pretty high as well. |
