If the allegations are true, was Bowie a rapist?
Yes, clearly. They were underage, end of story.

It's difficult to assess what would happen in the US. But, as I understand it, the judge intended to disregard a plea bargain and sentence Polanski to 50 years. (That might have been appropriate if he was up on a charge of directing Chinatown but that's another story). I'm not sure if there was any "testimony" in the original case - I think there was just a guilty plea on one charge and that no evidence was heard. I could be wrong about that, since I don't follow it closely - but you'd have to a be a little concerned about a sentencing process based on recollections people would now give, 40 years after the event.

Isn't he already guilty and sentenced? Just needs to be bundled in a sack by a bounty hunter and shipped back to the USA.

He pleaded guilty. He hasn't been sentenced. And I don't believe there was a trial or any evidence led at a sentencing hearing. Hence my comments.

Interesting. Would he get more time or an extra charge because of fleeing or just get let off because the judge was mouthing off about 50 years after agreeing to a plea bargain? Can he withdraw his plea because he was never sentenced?

Seems the victim received a settlement, so civil stuff is off the table too.

Who knows? In a system in which judges are elected, anything is possible.

I get that, and I also sympathise with the view that a victim shouldn’t get to decide whether the perpetrator gets punished or not. Personally, I still think Polanski should be extradited and jailed.

But I find her approach to this interesting nonetheless, in that it kind of chucks a bomb into the current narrative around sexual harassment etc. Victims aren’t supposed to feel this way, and a lot of people dismiss or ignore her as a result (check out that recent, lengthy Guardian piece about Polanski’s crime that didn’t even seek comment from her, for instance). But I’ve long thought that there’s no ‘right’ way for a victim to feel, and I think we can learn something by listening to her.

I definitely agree with the no right way for a victim to feel, I also agree he should be extradited and jailed. So I guess we are pretty much in agreement!

While it happened prior to I can't help but feel Polanski who had his wife and unborn child savagely murdered by the Manson family has already paid for his crime.

If the woman is prepared to forgive then 40 years after the fact the rest of us who weren't his victim should probably also.

Nope. Sharon was murdered in 1969, the rapes occurred in 1977, not that that matters anyway. Being a victim of crime doesn’t get you any leniency when you commit a crime against someone else.

In fact I’d think it would give you some empathy for the person your about to wrong.

And what about the other 4 victims? Polinski is scum, no two ways about it.

I don't actually love his films that much either. The Tenant was kind of interesting, and his Macbeth isn't that bad, but I don't think I'd watch either again. You'd probably like The Pianist, TP.
