Or you think that children should not, as a rule, carry guns.

Or otherwise exhibit thinking on this subject that isnt clinically disordered.

Farms and remote rural properties are precisely the kind of places you would expect to find registered firearms in our (comparatively) heavily regulated system. Even those like me who support strict gun control appreciate that these are legitimate places to have them; and while any death in such circumstances is an unspeakable tragedy, it stands to reason that such will occasionally occur (because people with guns do from time to time kill other people).

All I can say is that the US should be so lucky to only have a rural family gun homicide every now and then.

^ fully agreed, David.

On a different but related note, the US may be the indispensable democracy, but its social system shows the danger of democracy when it is unmoderated by reason. Like the election of Trump, this unreformable blight upon its peace should make us sceptical of the USs particular democratic model (which Australias model closely resembles).

Either dumb people get to vote, or we don't get a democracy. Can't have it both ways.

Bingo. Who would get to decide who's dumb anyway? Maybe the dumb ones are actually the smart ones?

^ Except thats not true. Its quite possible to have a democracy with stabilizers. The judiciary is an example. They are appointed, not elected. Similarly, in the UK House of Lords is (largely) appointed, with some hereditary peers. It is presently doing brilliant work injecting sense into the Brexit issue. Unlike members of the House of Commons which is living in terror of the tabloid newspapers, the HoL is ensuring that the views of the 48% who voted against Brexit are being heard.

Hitler came to power via a democratic process, where he got 33% of the vote. Though we can only guess, he would probably have gained more votes in a fair election in 1938.

The idea that democracy means simply everyone votes and the result is whatever they vote for is a recipe for poor government indeed. Good democracies give everyone a vote, and take direction from that vote, but they allow law to be reviewed and refined by elites before it is effected.

Personally Im also attracted to the idea of a second house elected by all, but granting an additional vote or two to those who have demonstrated life achievements : raising children successfully, long careers of public or voluntary service, making tax contributions, etc. itd need to be designed so that it didnt reinforce privilege, but I think that could be done.

Perhaps, then (without necessarily the word "dumb" above), it needs to be questioned whether the US is a democracy. Their prison inmates cannot vote, perhaps even after release. Voter registration seems to have a lot of dubious forces acting on it, too.

The answers simple: Ban right wing white males from owning guns. That will go a long way to reducing these senseless murders.

Another right wing red neck white wacko with a gun; mind you the wacko adjective was probably superfluous Wink

Nah he's definitely right wing. That is beyound debate. I saw a photo of his car laden (not bin laden) with stickers and posters that would make the KKK proud.

Left wing nutters usually go after the bigger end of town.

You know the one's: I hunt & I vote.....

The only thing you hunt with Glocks (of which he had a collection) are people. Anyhoo, the Democrats aren't exactly left wing anyway. The 2 party system over there is right and further right.
