Despite cutbacks from the Federal Government the ABC comes forward with this horrible story that will kill an industry.

Good

No more duds just dumped or killed

And no more live bait cruelty

Entertainment should not require cruelty

It's been well known about live baiting and I am flabbergasted that all of the people in authority are shocked with the revelations.

Adopting Greyhounds is a great program and over 600 from Vic were adopted last year.

So truth here is horrible, is that the issue? Or is the story wrong?

If people use live animals as bait & indeed torture captive animals such as rabbits, piglets & what have you to teach greyhounds to go faster then they those people should hung drawn & quartered - public shaming is a good way to start & their license to practice greyhound racing should be revoked.

If the industry can't operate with humane conditions then there should be no industry. Not a difficult standard surely.

If however, the dishlicking industry can clean up it's act then no issue.

The adoption scheme is a great scheme but it does not cover the the ,majority of greyhounds who don't make it.

Mind you there are some possums eating my tomatoes & my wife's roses that I might equivocate about...

It's a big IF.

Listening to one of the fella's on AW this morning wasn't inspiring although it sounded like the new Minister is getting tough. They had a big Industry Night this weekend at Crown that he Cancelled.

Public sentiment is against them now if the anger is maintained they'll change or their industry will die.

I've known some that have been trainers of greyhounds and have seen them treat the dogs very well and have never used live bait to train them. One guy used to buy meat and place where the rabbit usually goes and have him chase that. I cannot remember what the other guy used to do, but it wasn't using live bait at all.

Seeing them tying down the pig and having the dog run a couple of laps and then chase after the piglet was a bit sad. If it's been a practice for a long time it might be time that they changed this, and found a new way to train greyhounds.

There will be a fuss, an inquiry, some talk, some action .... and then back to life as normal. Same as the live export scandal. They will just get some taller fences and better security and keep their heads down till the fuss blows over.

PS: I only know one greyhound trainer. She loves her dogs and spends a fortune (which she can't really afford) looking after them for as long as they live. She'd no more hurt one of her dogs than one of her children.

PPS: I've met a couple of them. Beautiful dogs, intelligent, respectful, friendly as you like. I'm not at all a dog person, but even I like these chaps.

some good news already, long way to go:

"Already 4 training tracks and 23 trainers have been suspended for live baiting as a result of the Animals Australia / Animal Liberation Qld investigations. And we've provided substantial evidence to authorities that should see dozens more trainers prosecuted."

please add your signature to the fight (and yes, I did):

http://www.animalsaustralia.org/take_action/petitions/live-baiting

and last week I bought a display board in Thialand to help fight the cruel (illegal) custom of boliling/skinning dogs alive, for meat.

if I save one dog, one piglet, ive changed his world

that's a good start

got 2 min to spare? please sign here:

On the other side, here's a piece criticising the 'shock tactics' and agenda of the ABC documentary:

Look at the comments, David. Readers, quite rightly, are flaying the author's disgusting opinion alive, by about 14 to one.

I've got no sentimentality at all toward Rabbits or Possums, but using them like that is just bullshit. Also totally unnecessary as I understand Greyhounds aren't at all killers by nature, they just love the chase. Training them to think there's a live meal attached to that thing should be no more effective than putting a bowl of Pal on it, they'll just chase the thing regardless.

If Greyhound racing is going to survive as a sport it clearly needs to be a lot more tightly regulated.
