What a terrible injustice. The South African court system is hopelessly corrupt. The judge let a murderer get off very, very lightly with a "five year" sentence for the equivalent of manslaughter - "five years" being equal to les than one, in fact, because the murderer was let out absurdly early.

Having been pulled up on her mistake, the higher court sent the case back to the same judge who got it so horribly wrong the first time and, after waffling on for an hour, she decided that murder is worth only 20% more than manslaughter and let this disgusting scumbag get away almost unpenalised.

Where is D. Hinch when you need him?

Guilt fining IMO appropriate and correct.

Sentence - don't know and can't judge as I have no comparisons under SA law but it takes him well past his use by date as an athlete and tars him forever as a convicted murderer which will seriously impact his earning capacity in the future so it has a stronger impact than just the gaol time.

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but I watched this documentary by Louis Theroux on law and order in Johannesburg the other night. Looks like an absolutely terrifying country to live in, at least in the poorer neighbourhoods the fact someone went to jail at all for murder seems remarkable in light of this.

Prosecutors appealing for an increased sentence.

Quote:
State to appeal Oscar's sentence in SCA

Bloemfontein The State will challenge Oscar Pistorius's six year jail term in the Supreme Court of Appeal, the National Prosecuting Authority said on Thursday.

Today [Thursday] they filed papers in the High Court in Pretoria as a matter of formality and tomorrow they will be filing them in the Appeal's Court, NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said.

On July 6, Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison by Judge Thokozile Masipa.

In her sentencing, Masipa said that, while the crime committed was serious, a long term of imprisonment will not serve justice in this case.

In October 2014, Masipa sentenced Pistorius to five years behind bars for culpable homicide.

On December 3 last year, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that it agreed with the State. It overturned Masipas verdict and changed it to murder.

In the early hours of February 14, 2013, Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times through the locked door of the toilet in his Silver Woods Country Estate home.

He claimed he thought there was an intruder behind the door about to emerge and harm him, and that Reeva was still in bed.
