Post subject: Best Value Pick team 1990-2015: Opinion piece | |
|
Yes I am a bit bored with the lack of posts on Nick's so here is my attempt to drum up some discussion. The following is a list of players we recruited to the club and gave very little up in terms of trade, elite high draft picks or got major "bang for our buck":
B: S. Burns(pick 90), Mal Michael (rookie), B. Johnson (pick 62)
HB: H. O'Brien (rookie), S. Wakelin (pick 49), N. Maxwell (rookie)
C: T. Lockyer (rookie), L. Ball (pick 30), S. Wellingham (rookie)
HF: S. Russell (pick 39), L. Brown (pick 73), D.Beams (pick 29)
F: L. Davis (pick 34), P. Medhurst (steak knives), S. O'Bree (pre)
F: J. Witts (NSW s/hip), D. Swan (58 pick), T. Francis (pick 95)
ICH: A. Toovey (rookie), G. Freeborn (pre-season), T. Goldsack (pick 63)
J. Blair (rookie)
EMERG: M. Clarke (Intl), J. Thomas (pick 75), P. Seedsman (pick 76)
B. Macaffer (rookie)
Not considered:
* T. Varcoe (paid fair price: O'Brien)
* J. Elliott (part of pick 25 & M. Clarke part 2)
* A. Fasolo (not made it yet)
* T. Langdon (too early in career)
* Marley W. (too early)
* Clement/Holland cost us P. Williams
Any opinions welcome. Cheers _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum

Wow, that's an eye opener list. I probably wouldn't include 2nd rounders Beams and L. Davis in that list though as that is considered a pick of value as opposed to a meh pick. But as a team it's quite solid apart from the lack of a big forward that can kick a few - funnily enough just about the only position guaranteed to be a high draft pick despite what happens in the rest of their career. _________________ McRae for Governor-General! |

Yeah I picked Beams for the simple reason that if a "redraft" happened again he would arguably be number 1. I reckon he has contemporaries such as Naitanui, S. Hill, Hartlett and Ziebell covered for performances, consistency, b&f and All Australians plus impact on the big stage.
So to get someone at 29 and have them nudge no.1 on a "re-evaluation" is pretty stunning. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

While he doesn't like the term 'steak knives' Crisp has done alright and is similar to Medhurst. Only one season in but might be worth a spot on the emergency list. |
