Shooting a soldier while parachuting to ground is, as you say a war crime.

It's not a war crime, it's more a case of bad manners and bad intelligence.

I think it is a war crime 3 under Protocol I in addition to the 1949 Geneva Conventions ???

Sure more knowledgable minds here will know for sure if that is correct.

It's a matter of intent.
Shooting at a soldier in a parachute is not a crime, it's called defending yourself from an armed attacker.
To do so soldiers are permitted to use almost anything from heavy machine guns to anti aircraft guns.
Shooting at a parachute from an aircraft that is in distress is.
To clear-up any misunderstanding I quickly deleted the post, but not quickly enough. Embarassed

When I said it was bad manners and bad intelligence that isn't quite what I meant.
Bad intel because what can be learned from captured air-men is of more value than a corpse hanging from a tree.
I'm not quite sure what I meant by bad manners but to use Wokko's example German air-men airmen didn't parachutists (there were very few provable incidents of them doing so and yet Allied pilots were often killed by those on the ground.
Civilian lynch mobs often(?) would arrive before the Luftwaffa could claim and shield them from the TENO and fire-fighting crews putting out the fires in the burning cities the Allied bombers were bombing.

These Turkmen are living in land they have claimed for thousands of years.
They are fighting for their right to live in their land.
They are NOT part of ISIS and want nothing to do with them and yet the Russians are bombing them, almost with impunity!
If 1 of their pilots was shot down and killed...well all I can say is I'd "probably" be tempted to do the same if Russian planes were bombing Clunes in support of a Party of thugs that want to impose their Idiotologies on me with the use of barrles filled with nerve gas!
As it stands...I'm happy to stay away from cries of war crimes (particularly after Russia shot down a civilian passenger plane in the Ukraine!) till I hear ALL the facts.

Fair enough 3 - I am not a big war historian or remotely knowing of war anything really - but I read the Protocol and to me I reckon it's a war crime.

Seems to me the Kurds - men and women - having been fighting Daesh since day 1 - and been pretty effective. The Turkish Government have admitted shelling the Kurds in Syria - their hands are far from clean.

We don't seem to have been or be interested in this - is that cause we need to pretend that Turkey are really on "our" side because we need to have bases there because of the geographical location???

The Turkmen have indeed rights which the Turks seem happy to fight for - but so indeed do the Kurds which the Turks seem happy to fight against

What a world eh Rolling Eyes

Russia is adamant that it has the proof that Turkey is involved in ISIS' oil trade. The full article is in the link below.

Quote:
Russia says it has proof Turkey involved in Islamic State oil trade

Russia's defense ministry said on Wednesday it had proof that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his family were benefiting from the illegal smuggling of oil from Islamic State-held territory in Syria and Iraq.

Moscow and Ankara have been locked in a war of words since last week when a Turkish air force jet shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian-Turkish border, the most serious incident between Russia and a NATO state in half a century.

Erdogan responded by saying no one had the right to "slander" Turkey by accusing it of buying oil from Islamic State, and that he would stand down if such allegations were proven to be true. But speaking during a visit to Qatar, he also said he did not want relations with Moscow to worsen further.

I've gotta admit, every time I read the title of this thread I picture a Turkey holding a rocket launcher saying "Uh uh, nope, I'm no one's Christmas Dinner"

Maaate, I've been saying this for a very long time.

They are a religious fundamentalist government who wear suits & who inherited a pluralistic semi secular state which they're are trying to break down.

Some Journalists are jailed & harmed if not killed (come to think of it, that could be handy in Australia) Wink

Erdogan is referred to as the Sultan for good reason. The laws have been changed to suit his grandiose wants.

Good links David and WPT!

The article that David linked certainly raises some excellent points about Turkey's involvement how the fight against ISIS is merely a disguise for other interests by various powers. Their connection to ISIS is surely undeniable now.

WPT you're right about Turkey's corrupt and increasingly authoritarian ways. There's compelling arguments that the Turkish government is heading down the path of Islamisation as the articles below suggests. Even Putin has hinted at it recently.
