Nah, Rivers is only a development coach. Basically his game day duties will be more VFL then AFL.

Craig Macrae didn't get offered a new contract, believe he was in a Development Manager role.

Wondered about this initially then saw him on the pies site and realised the Balme link.
Clearly Balmey would know what he has to offer as a leader and potential coach.

I think Tapping will take over the overall development role and we will save some footy spend budget by bring rivers in as a line development coach

We all get to see what new players have to offer, and generally some idea of the skills they bring.

I'd be interested to know, given all the players that retired and were delisted this year, what Jarad Rivers brings to the party, especially given he appears to have no discernible track record as a coach.

I have no opinion either way, and the club clearly has better judges than me - just interested is all.

Jared Rivers — development coach at Collingwood

FORMER Cat and Demon Jared Rivers completed the AFLPA’s Next Coach Program during his playing career, also having coaching roles at Xavier College and in Geelong’s VFL program.

It set him up perfectly to move straight from senior footy into a development role at the Magpies.

Collingwood director of football Neil Balme said Rivers will play a crucial role in “developing the next 200-game players for this club.”

“As a respected player who has recently stepped away from the game, Jared will have the ability to build strong relationships with our younger players and easily relate to their different stages of development,” Balme told the club website.

Thanks JW - I did read that, but I'm not sure it tells me why him unless he is the only recently retired player with that sort of background - which may well be the case I guess.
