Crazy stuff, Neil. Hard to believe such a thing could happen.

By the way, I was talking to a police officer last night at work - a woman had been hit by a car and he was looking for witnesses - and he came across as respectful, friendly and not at all arrogant. Hard to extrapolate a lot from a short conversation, of course, but it seems like the force is attracting some decent people after all.

Oh wow, I'll be sure to pass that on, I'm sure they will be so pleased to hear you've shifted your attitude slightly Rolling Eyes

Ever wonder what they think of you??

As with umpires, they are human beings, everyone has an opinion, especially cops, reading people is a big part of doing their job successfully. unless your hiding your prejudged opinion of them very well, i reckon they'd have a fair opinion of you right back!

This is the thing. I treated this guy yesterday as a human being and he treated me the same. No prejudice either way.

You don't think the world would be better without prejudice? You're hardly immune from it yourself, so not sure why you're up on your high horse here. I'm not asking you to congratulate me for not being a tool, just pointing out the difference between generalised perception/prejudice and actual face-to-face interpersonal interactions.

It would be an interesting psychological insight to understand your latent issues with authority, but it's good to see you can acknowledge when experience differs from perception, even if it did come across as a little condescending.

it seemed as though you were expressing surprise that a cop could actually be a real person and not a tool. As we know however, tone doesn't carry well in text so maybe that's just perception. Wink

^

Which proves the point about perception and how easy it is to read things that aren't intended.

When in doubt, have another drink. It works for me. Razz Wink

But, why wouldn't you? Did you have to make a conscious effort to treat him as a human being? Seems like a strange thing to say otherwise..

Anyway, any disparaging remarks about people, anywhere, being police officers after the tragic events in Paris? Seriously, you couldn't pay me enough to be a cop and be on the front line of that sort of stuff. Back to the poll options - they're definitely not 'just ordinary people'.

The attacks made me think of this thread for a moment, too. I guess it just re-affirms my view that we need the police, and how much I wish that we didn't.

As long as there's lunatics that think they're better than everyone else, there's going to need to be people to pull them back into line.

Yes, if we could live on Wonder Woman's perfect island with no crime, it'd be lovely (although, there's no men there either Confused ) but I'm pretty sure there's as much chance of that as there is of me sitting at work nude. Razz

Given the intrigue that goes on in some Lesbian nightclubs, I'm pretty sure that island would still need policewomen. Razz
