Frank "Typhoon" Tyson has passed away at 85.
Most of you won't remember him playing cricket as the fastest bowler in the world in Tests for England (he was Wisden's player of the year for 1955) but, along with Keith Miller, he educated many of us about the game as we listened to and watched cricket after he emigrated here in 1960. He was an erudite and thoughtful student of the game in an era when that was valued highly.
I was very sorry to hear this news and offer condolences to his family and friends. |

One of the absolute fastest bowlers ever (an old bloke I knew who loved cricket like myself and saw everyone from the Bradman era through to the Ponting era rated Tyson and Jeff Thomson as hands down the two quickest bowlers he ever saw).
Frank was also a great writer on the game.
I only saw he passed reading cricinfo the other day and was sad to hear of it.
RIP Typhoon. |

used to enjoy listening to him when he spent a few years commentating on the nine coverage. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

He came to my high school in Townsville (Pimlico High) circa 1985-86 to do an afternoon of coaching.
Typhoon taught us to "sniff" the ball (keep your head over the ball) when batting. _________________ A strong man stands up for himself ... a stronger man stands up for others. |

Easy to say when you're not facing the likes of Frank Tyson. |
