Starts on Thursday, in Brisbane.

Will be interesting if McCullum wins the toss. It's a graveyard for visiting teams after sending Australia in to bat, because of the perception of the Gabba wicket being something of a greentop.

He does have Boult and Southee but history says you should bat first.

This was my preferred Test XI for this series as of 2 months ago, my thinking hasn't changed.

Quote:

My preferred Test XI for the Australian summer:
1 MKlinger
2 DWarner
3 UKhawaja
4 SSmith
5 AVoges
6 JBurns
7 PNevil (wk)
8 JPattinson
9 MJohnson or MStarc (based on form at the time)
10 PSiddle or JHazlewood (based on form at the time)
11 NLyon
12th MMarsh

The selectors obviously rate Mitchell Marsh so are trying to give him every opportunity to succeed. Or more likely, they're continuing with this all-rounder obsession they've had since Andrew Flintoff tore us a new one in 2005.
I don't see M.Marsh as a test #6 at this stage at all, and his bowling isn't in front of any of about a dozen fast/medium bowlers around the country.

I can't see Joe Burns as a long-term test opener.
He's more suited to the middle order the way he pushes at the ball.
From what I've seen he doesn't have the subtleties required to be successful against world-class swing & seam bowling with a new pill.

Should be an extremely competitive series.
Can't wait!!!!

I hope that Khawaja does enough to lock in a test batting spot. He is far too talented to leave out but just has to contribute runs to remain in the team. This will be the perfect opportunity for him to grab a batting spot with both hands.

KM, re. Klinger.

He's 35 (remember the rumblings about Mike Hussey, because he entered Test cricket at age 30)

He also averages under 40 for first class cricket.

Australia's decision to select Josh Hazlewood is Victoria's gain with veteran fast bowler Peter Siddle set to play for his state in the Sheffield Shield this week.

Siddle was omitted for the first Commonwealth Bank Test of the summer against New Zealand at the Gabba, and barring an 11th-hour injury to the hosts, will fly to Sydney after the toss tomorrow morning for the Bushrangers' Shield clash against the NSW Blues at the Sydney Cricket Ground starting Friday.

Siddle was Australia's standout bowler in the last Test of the Ashes at The Oval in August, taking six wickets in his first match in the Baggy Green for eight months in the comprehensive innings and 46-runs consolation victory.

Rogers gave a very solid few years service at the top of the order when picked in his 30's.
They rate Bancroft but obviously don't think he's ready otherwise they would've picked him, so why not a solid short term solution for now??

Re Klinger's first-class average - it took him a long time to rack up his maiden first-class century.
Remember when Reifel declared on him on 99 before he had one, and he took ages to recover from it.
I don't have a stat, but I reckon his first class average would've been around 30 when he left Victoria, closer to 50 for SA/WA/English Counties.

And, I really like the selection of Khawaja at 3.

Would much rather swap Burns and Ussy.

Your first drop batsman needs flair. Ussy a much better foil for Warner.
