http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-10-07/revealed-what-it-takes-to-earn-firstround-free-agency-compensation-

It appears you get a first round pick only if the free agent you lose is to be paid in the top 5% of all players aged 25 and over in the AFL. Since there are about 270 players over 25 in the AFL, that means, roughly put, that you have to be in the top 13 to 15 players in the AFL on salary. Since there are 18 clubs, that probably means you will only get round 1 compo if the player you lose is going to be the highest-paid player at his new club.

Obviously a dramatic tightening up.

Such a good change.

Eventually we will get to a point where no one gets compensation picks, or at least compo picks in the first round.

Taking out father/son and academy picks the first round of the national draft should be in order from 1-18 on draft night, nothing should change that.

Free agency is to help players move to their club of choice after they've served a long period at a club, it's not there to help clubs who lose players at all.

Good news as Leuenberger is worth nothing more than a 2nd rd pick let alone pick 3.

Frawley wasn't either but given that he's just commanded a spot in the premiers 22 at least a first round pick was justifiable.

Melbourne simply got lucky they bottomed out at the right time.

Hawthorn when they lost Franklin not so much.

It's a crap shoot of a system.

Does it put Dangerfield's pick in some doubt given that the cats have a pretty even pay grade for their top players - ie. reportedly he'll get the same as Selwood and Hawkins at about 800K a year? Would there be 12 other players in the league earning over 800K? probably not I guess, but it's fascinating.

Adelaide will match the bid as they should IMO and force Geelong to trade pick 9.

By the way how about Geelong.

They've been linked to Danger, Henderson, Selwood and now Zac Smith.

Very Happy Anything to keep the Bloos below us is a satisfactory solution! Yarran would be a devastating winger in any other team. I hope no team is willing to trade a top ten pick for his services and to all those Blu supporters who demand a first round pick if he decides to leave can go jump!

Dangerfield is worth a first round pick for sure but it shouldn't come at the expense of diluting other picks for non involved clubs. Geelong will just have to give up pick 9. The scum want that pick for Henderson, dreaming. Selwood will cost them nothing you would think. Cats might have to throw a lot to get Smith as well. Maybe they are doing a Meatloaf, 2 out of 3 aint bad with Selwood the steak knives.

Suggested on the news that 2016 picks will be needed to get the Smith deal done.

Sums it up perfectly.

Yep. Must be fanfuckingtastic to have a bottomless salary cap.
Do we call that diet-COLA, or Coke-zero?

There goes Geelong from not being a bottom feeder to possibly making the finals...... Rolling Eyes

Uh-huh. I expect them to replace Adelaide the way things are unfolding.
And Port with Dixon up forward would be hard to dismiss.
So we are relying on another team in the eight taking a slide, in order for us to get in for the coming season.
Thus I expect a massive mid table log jam in 2016.
