Dutton resigns as home affairs minister and moves to the back bench to prepare for the next challenge _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I know Australian politics is unstable, but I did not see this coming at all. Who on earth in the Liberal Party would be deluded enough to think that Dutton is electable? Or am I the one who's deluded and people can't get enough of jackboots?
What's clear is that the party doesn't like Turnbull. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Dutton. LOL!
I'm laughing but a little bit concerned, too, because I thought Abbott was a total joke and he got elected.
And in answer to you, David, yes I think you are deluded and there is a whole lot of people out there who want more jackboots. _________________ kill for collingwood! |

Abbott and his little band of gollum's have just shot the LNP in the stomach.
The only way forward is if Turnbull steps down and doesn't contest the leadership, clearing the way for Julie Bishop to go against Dutton. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

^ Not a bad idea, but my impression is that they hate Bishop as much as they hate Turnbull. I have a feeling this is only going to go one way... _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

It's a stupid act of self vandalism. Even though Labor has been ahead in the polls, Turnbull has consistently been ahead of Shorten as preferred PM. By continually undermining him and compromising his ability to lead the party they've caused him to be an ineffective leader and have just given Labor a free kick from the goal square.
If they go down the Dutton path the party will get what it deserves, a serious enema at the election. Hopefully it's the fecal matter that's flushed out, not the good ones. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

^ Couldn't agree more. As disappointing as Turnbull has been, I still think he could have been a good Liberal prime minister if he'd been allowed to be. But ultimately contemporary politics seems to be more about interpersonal grudges and factional power plays than any meaningful vision for the country's future. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Don't let Tannin hear you mention Bishop and Leadership in the same sentence.
FWIW I think this is only round 1, Dutton didn't call this spill, Turnbull did and only managed to scrape a win. Shows that as usual Turnbull is really good at party politics but terrible at leadership. He's already lost the electorate and has now demonstrably lost half the party room without Dutton even trying to pull in more votes like they do with a normal challenge.
Turnbull is despised by the Conservative right, I know a few planning a scorched Earth vote for Shorten just to get rid of Turnbull. Still think Dutton would be better off waiting until the election and becoming Opposition Leader. |

Glad we can agree on something, Skids. (The first sentence, at any rate!)
Hard to see how Dutton doesn’t become PM now. If so, hope he gets smashed so hard in the election that we never hear from the scheming would-be Mussolini potato head ever again. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Meanwhile, Albo would have thrown the toys out of the cot and be having a full blown tantrum, cos any chance he had of rolling Shorten to take the Labor leadership before the next election just got smashed. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

^ And I'm kind of fine with that. I supported him in the initial leadership contest with Shorten, and have never liked Bill much, but honestly Albo just seems like more of the same brain-numbing robotic Labor leadership, and really can't see what he brings to the table. I'm okay with the idea of Shorten being PM now. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

apparently there is a small question over Dutton's status as an MP with a company he owns taking direct subsidies from the government, possibly in breach of the Constitution, which is a matter for the High Court. (wonder who leaked that one) |

I heard about that yesterday, apparently something has changed only recently that now potentially means it's unconstitutional. Can't remember what.
Saw a bloke on The Project last night explaining it, said it was part of an investigation into ministers in general, said there was no leak.
Edit, here's an article explaining it
