I don't think anyone is advocating blindly opening the gates at the moment. I'm happy for there to be some form of processing and discrimination between refugees and non-refugees. What's concerning is the increasing number of people, some of them in positions of power, advocating blindly closing the gates.

Nobody's suggesting that the 'locals' be outnumbered. If we let in ten times the number we've committed to (say, 120,000), we'd only be increasing our population by 0.5%. Hardly being 'outnumbered', is it?

Depends where you put them.

Put large numbers of migrants in one area and you create ghetto's and enclaves.

Put large numbers of migrants who already demonstrate difficulty in assimilating into western culture in one area and you create a timebomb.

I say house all the new arrivals in Caulfield, Balaclava, Glen Iris, Brighton and Hampton!!
For perspective purposes.

Anyone walked through the streets of Sunshine or Werribee at night in recent times??

Remember a couple of years ago when the Indian newspapers were reporting how racist a place Melbourne is because Indian students were being assaulted here??
Well, these naive little petals were catching trains home at night with phones, laptops, money on them; and getting of at dark, seedy, Sunshine Station (before the upgrade).
Waiting for their prey: the Sudanese youth gangs!!
So, Australia and more specifically Melbourne gets labelled racist because of Africans bashing and robbing Indians!! The irony......

And from the sheltered vocal progressives: any opposing thought other than "let's open our doors and arms to all" - you're racist!

There is a debate that needs to be had without labels being thrown around.
Compassion and helping where one can is important - but looking after one's own backyard first is more important in my opinion.

I agree with you KM.

It was back in 2008-2009 from what I can recall when the issue of Indian students being assaulted around Melbourne became a major talking point not only here but back in India as well, but I never saw it as a racial issue overall rather than I saw it as an issue of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

You're asking for trouble if you're riding on a train alone in Sunshine or Broadmeadows for example in the middle of the night or hanging around seedy places in the early hours of the morning especially in suburbs noted for higher crime rates.

No one deserves to be assaulted or threatened but you cannot be surprised when you hear of bad situations like this occurring especially in certain places.

Have you been to Brunswick lately? We lived just off Sydney Road for about a year; it often seemed like the population up there was about 50% North African/Middle Eastern. Never felt unsafe for a moment (although we were there when Jill Meagher was killed).

I don't think you'll find all that many down-and-out new arrivals that need to scrap for everything they can get in Brunswick in 2016 mate. (Intentionally missing the point??)
It's been a well-established Lebanese/Turkish area for many years. Now being shared with the funny beard-wearing, funny bicycle-riding people these days......

Brunswick has social housing blocks like most suburbs in that area, which is where you tend to find a lot of new arrivals. I guess it depends on what part of it you're talking about it's a big suburb. I think Brunswick East is the more gentrified area, whereas West (where I lived a few years back before moving to the apartment off Albion St) is more suburban. It's not the roughest of areas by any means, but that doesn't mean there aren't refugees or new migrants in the suburb.

BTW, I did a one-off teaching gig at Sunshine primary late last year related to my writing course. Very multicultural, as you'd expect, but the kids (Years 5 and 6) were incredibly polite, attentive and intelligent. I was pretty impressed with it, and while I'm sure the suburb has its problems, I left with a very different impression to the one I'd come in with.
