How many Syrian refugees should Australia take?

I'm not sure why being in the Provinces automatically means you can't get work there or that there's nothing there, but clearly flooding into the city isn't going to increase their chances of accommodation or work if that is indeed their rationale and not just an assumption.

^ It's the same anywhere, isn't it? Here in Australia, there's mass unemployment in the country and people flock to the city for jobs, resulting in overcrowding and drain on resources. I suspect that that dynamic is much more severe in developing and middle-tier countries; think of the slums in Mumbai, etc. It might seem like an easy fix to kick people back out, but I just don't think it works that way (and I suspect there's going to be a lot more hostility, prejudice and, yes, racism in more rural areas). Unless the government has a decent support program in place, it's just another displacement they have to endure without any clear end in sight.

It's interesting though that where refugees have been settled in rural areas of Australia, there's evidence that they've fitted in and been adopted more readily than in the cities. Google refugees and Shepparton as 1 example.

There's some large cities in the Turkish provinces too, but I concede that people for some reason think there's more job opportunities in Cities. I left the bush and moved to the city at 19 not because there wasn't any work, but not the work I wanted to do. Pretty much my whole year 12 class left and is scattered around the country and world.

This guy got deported back to Syria because he was living in Istanbul but his permit was to live in Bursa which is hardly a small town or rural area.

What seems to be happening in Turkey seems to be similar to where ever anyone has taken large scale refugee intakes. They flock to large cities and locals after initially being supportive, get pissed off

Yeah, in a country town, even a largeish one like Shep, there's far more of a community feel than in a large city suburb. Refugees become part of the community. There'll always be people who don't like it but it seems to work far better.

Bring in a family, Dad gets work and makes friends with people from different backgrounds. No public transport to speak of means Kids can't just jump a tram or train and go 6 suburbs away to cause anonymous mayhem, and the community gets around them in the same way they got around the migrants in the 50's.

Kids get a far better chance to assimilate in that environment.

Another point about regional towns is that it's harder to exist within an ethnic ghetto (ghetto not meant in a pejorative sense). You end up having to come to terms with the host culture rather than pretending you're still in Athens, Saigon or Juba.

Thousands of Iraqi refugees leave Finland voluntarily

Thousands of Iraqi refugees who arrived in Finland last year have decided to cancel their asylum applications and to return home voluntarily, citing family issues and disappointment with life in the frosty Nordic country.

Almost two thirds of the asylum seekers last year were young Iraqi men, but some are now having second thoughts, so Finland will begin chartering flights to Baghdad from next week to take them home.

Just watched an ABC show about settled refugees from Manus (nobfoxtel here!) . Interesting, thought provoking.

1 guy was sponsored by a Canadian,Aussie couple who’s Aussie daughter was a nurse on Manus, they raised $30k to get him out and settled in Canada. He’s happy, got a job in the tourism industry and attending uni.

A bunch of 300 plus aussies across the States embarrasses about Australia’s treatment of refugees are helping out the refugees the Yanks settles. They don’t get much support but then the States have enough welfare problems. Interesting the different attitudes. 4 guys in a flat all with jobs but miserable, it was Australia or nothing for them. One would rather go back to Manus. One is mad his family have been accepted to Australia now but he can’t get in. These 4 are a worry! And pretty unappreciative if the USA. Another guy lives around the corner and has truly embraced Chicago, a job, friends he says I am accepted, I am Free, I am loved. When he left Manus the immigration guy said “don’t come back’ the US custom guy said ‘Welcone to America “.

Interesting show. They came from a country I’ve never heard of and I can’t remember, not Syria though.
