I was only 10 years old when the 2004 election occurred and as someone with little interest in politics at the time all I can remember was he came across as a loose cannon as David described and the infamous handshake with John Howard.
He never really stood a chance in winning the election after that handshake no matter how good or bad his proposed policies were before that.

I was 15, and decided to spend the Saturday scrutineering at Chisholm Primary for the Liberal Party. These were the days when I entertained notions of becoming a Young Liberal. True story.
At least I can tell myself I did my bit to stop Mark Latham from becoming prime minister.
(Seriously, though, citing the infamous handshake as the reason for his loss isn't much less far-fetched. The vast majority of people who went to the booths that day would have already made up their minds.) _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

The handshake was a genuine shocker. It was more than enough to turn the intention of 1,2, even 3 people in a hundred - and most elections are won and lost by smaller margins than that. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

People change. The first time I voted I voted for Andrew Peacock. |

Not long after that election Mark Latham retired due to being very ill with pancreatitis, which is apparently very painful, and at the time I wondered if it explained his sometimes extreme behaviour. [/img] |

There's nothing wrong with changing political views over time Dangles! I was just surprised that David actually supported the Liberal Party once upon a time.
I'm not sure whether you can attribute Latham's erratic behaviour due to being ill with pancreatitis. His behaviour since he retired from politics hasn't been much better and in some ways he's even more erratic and bitter now. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

While he has some intellectual novelty, most of the time Latham represents the worst kind of Australian masculinity - bullying, crude, insensitive and impulsive. Always has done, always will. I think the ALP anointed him with the same instincts that led the Libs to anoint Abbott - the pernicious idea that politics is a blood-sport, rather than the civilised alternative to conflict. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |
