Our third lowest home crowd against a Victorian team this century at the MCG with the top two being matches that occurred in 2000 so what's going on here?

Are people disillusioned by the club's recent performances? Are they disillusioned by the wider competition and the AFL as a whole? Or is the Saturday afternoon time slot no longer the preferred time slot for most people?

I'm trying to understand why a club that boasts about having 70,000 plus members can only attain a crowd of 37,894 in a time slot that is considered popular by many people if the reaction of people from last year's horrendous fixturing schedule is anything to go by.

If I had to estimate how many people attended today my guess would be about 23-25k were Collingwood supporters and about 12-14k were Melbourne supporters so what on earth is going on here that is resulting in such low numbers.

For some context here are the crowds of the other home games at the MCG this year!

Round 3 2015 - Collingwood v St.Kilda (Friday Night) = 45,197
Round 6 2015 - Collingwood v Geelong (Friday Night) = 52,152
Round 9 2015 - Collingwood v North Melbourne (Sunday Afternoon) = 43,197
Round 11 2015 - Collingwood v GWS (Early Sunday Afternoon) = 43,390
Round 14 2015 - Collingwood v Hawthorn (Friday Night) = 75,880

A little from column A

A little from column B

Think our poor performance is the main driver. We've lost the casuals from the "journey" to 10, and I actually thought Old Man Malthouse made a good point on the round-table, people don't have a whole day to devote to footy consistently these days. Also surprised how many people now tell me they don't want to "make up the numbers in the 8" - that's also supporters from other teams. Seems as though there's a drop off once a Premiership can't be won.

Personally this is the least passionate I've been about Collingwood ever - even at 8-3, I found myself not feeling the verve of previous seasons. Think there's a few people who would have dropped off because the very "Collingwood" team of 10 and 11 has been dismantled. Lot of guys we loved have been moved on, and replaced by kids. Throw in the game really isn't much chop to watch live for the reasons mentioned ad naseum (over umpiring, loud music, officious security, price)...

Would wonder if people didn't go because of the AFL "social engineering" telling people how to watch, but I feel from afar the game isn't as passionately enjoyed in Victoria anymore.

Thoughts?

There is no excitment about this team, there is no X factor, there is no great skill level.
Just a dour stop start team effort that is just boring to watch...
And then there is all the other rubbish from Goodes to light beer only to a corporate culture etc.. etc..

I have said for while now that the mcg is to big for us in most games.
We need a small 35 to 40 thousand seat stadium.
The days of 70 to 90 thousand crowd days are over.
It will only happen on days like Anzac day.

When I was a kid growing up in a country town the local footy crowd was 6 or 7 deep right around the ground. It is likely to be less than 2 now.
The world has changed and now the Pies will find the same forces at work.

Why go sit out in the freezing cold when you can get the match live on TV at home?

Or maybe Saturday afternoon is not the great timeslot the minority keep claiming it is? Majority of supporters would have local sporting commitments, either playing or taking kids or supporting their team every Saturday, its why night games are so much better.

I saw this post on BF but it pretty much sums up quickly why people are not attending games these days especially in Victoria.

Quote:
Congested football, onerous goal line reviews, repeat bouncing after goals, low scoring, political issues paralysing the game, drugs, administrations scruples being questioned heavily.. Footy is going through difficult times and crowds are increasingly reflecting this.

I go to enjoy the cut price hot dogs and watching the Pies play. I am not like DTM who expects us to win every game otherwise he gets drunk and abuses people in the Cheer Squad like Joffa.
