Of course, if it was Jamie Elliot ducking his head and Rioli tackling, Rioli would have received the free for having his legs taken...

That's what I said in the after game thread, I just don't see the difference!

The irony is that Varcoe was panalized because he was caught in no mans land.

In my opinion, if Varcoe made no play on the ball and simply allowed Rioli to run into his legs, he would likely have been in line for a free, especially if he exaggerated the contact. At worst, it would likely have been play on.

However, he tried to get low to play the ball and therefore was partly to blame for the contact.

The problem is that if Varcoe made no play on the ball, chances are Rioli was clever enough to turn away from the contact and then Varcoe is lamented for not attacking the ball hard enough.

Bottom line is that the Rules are simply terrible. A player that moves in a forward direction with his head down should be penalized for initiating head high contact when it is not absolutely critical to gaining possession

Similarly, a player should be able to make contact with the head of that player so long as that player is also making a legitimate attempt to get the ball. So hip is bad, but incidental contact with the shoulder while yourself bending over (as Varcoe did) should not be penalized.

The real problem is that no matter how fairly you make the rules, the stars will always get the benefit of the doubt due to the star factor and their superior ability to work frees.
