Post subject: Hillsong Church shamed (again). Misogyny at it's best/worst | |
|
Well glory be.
The Head of the Hilsong Church thought it would be a jolly good idea to invite this other American Hillsong Neanderthal Pastor Mark Driscoll to speak in Australia.
They probably still think it's a good idea but got shamed out of it.
The good Pastor refers to women as "penis houses".
A real charmer this Driscoll. I suppose he was quoted out of context.

I'm sure he's misquoting the Song of Solomon there. What it really says is this: Don't let total penises set foot in your house; send them on back home! _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

Not actually as disgraceful as it sounds. I believe that this was just an unfortunate slip of the tongue. You know how these things get picked up and repeated everywhere. He didn't intend to say "women" at all, he was, of course, thinking of Labradors. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Can anyone actually provide some context for this? Rather than just pushing the "misogyny!" button, can anyone actually explain what it was he was trying to say? It strikes me as odd that a Christian pastor of any kind would be talking about genitalia in such a vivid manner, but that's not necessarily grounds for public hanging on its own.
Not that it matters; he's associated with Hillsong, so obviously a nutcase. I just read this elsewhere and thought it was strange how context-free the reporting was. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

He was trying to say that women were created by good lord to service men, glory be to god in all his wonder.
^ Yes, I know, that sounds like unimaginative, unfunny parody, but it's no joke, that was the context.
By the way, describing the near-universal revulsion at these statements by an extremist misogynist arsehole as "pressing the misogyny button" is downright bizarrely out of touch.
^ If you listened to ABC radio current affairs instead of feeding your brain on that low-calorie trendy pap you read, you'd already know this stuff. It was covered in fair detail and with commendable professional restraint. Good luck finding that sort of quality reporting in the newspapers. Maybe the Age, though doubtful. The Guardian will have covered it, but not as news, it'll be buried somewhere in some slanted juvenile opinion column dressed up as heavy-duty thought and garnished with a garish click-bait headline. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Nope, still not getting it:

He's evidently certifiably nuts, or at least was a decade and a half ago (good lord, the things I would have been saying on Internet forums back then...), but evidence of rampant misogyny? Not necessarily. If you think about the Latin meanings of penis and vaginas, he's essentially saying the same thing. To what end, I'm not sure. But this is hardly MRA-style "respect the cock" stuff. He just seems to be making a crazy metaphor. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

He's saying that god created women to service men. What part of that do you still not understand? _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Isn't that exactly what Christians believe?

Look, I'm not defending the guy. I did a bit more reading, and it's obvious that he has pretty deep issues with sex and that he's pretty crazy in general. I just find it weird that people jumped on the whole "penis houses" thing like a smoking gun when the very word 'vagina' more or less means, well, 'penis house'.
(And while I used to think that was horribly sexist, I'm not so sure any more. Male and female genitalia have, after all, evolved to be compatible, so, apart from valid cultural critiques about active and passive roles, it's not that bad an analogy.)
And calling for him to be refused entry to Australia, as some people did before Hillsong backpedalled, is pretty ridiculous. Are we so threatened by (cough) "unconventional" ideas that we can't tolerate people at some conference one we wouldn't touch with a barge pole listening to them? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

"The term vagina is from Latin vāgīnae, literally "sheath" or "scabbard"; the Latinate plural of vagina is vaginae."
Apart from his comments being a tad vulgar I don't see the issue here. Ignore him and he'll go away. |

There is a difference? OK, I'll grant you that there is a difference of degree, but is there a difference of kind? _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Tanya Levin's critique was subtle:
Former member Tanya Levin wrote: | They never claimed to be about the poor. They claimed to be about the Gospel. |
For Christians, that ought to be a bigger insult than a long list of expletives: It's the equivalent of your mechanic saying he never claimed he was about cars or even Newtonian mechanics; rather, he specialises in celestial motion
However, it is unfair to comment on specific congregations, although there does seem to be a growing list of bad signals from Hillsong. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.
