Field Marshall Zhukov or Rommel would be my choices, although Trump would probably deal with Rommel the same way Hitler did.

^ if it were a matter of generalship - and I hope to God it's not, because military adventures are unlikely to help - then i can think of almost no-one worse than Macarthur or Patton to fight a war that would be more political than total. Peaking early and before it gets very serious, Trump will surely implode, if history is any guide.

This is a strange age. This weekend that great, historic political party British Labour elected as its leader a man who has never even been on a house of commons committee, let alone led anything ; a man who has spent most of his parliamentary career defying the party whip to vote for various causes that are (in British terms) Far Left. This is interesting for many reasons and on many levels, but the connection with Trump is that it shows how far party activists are drifting from the electorate, and reaching out to populism. It's a good time to be a political joirnalist - the supply-side is interesting.

Wokko, think for once.

This isn't about choosing the best general, certainly not the best fighting general - Blind Freddie could win the military contest given the massive logistical and technological disparity. It's not a contest it's a no-contest. BUT that has to be done by bringing together a fractious, brawling coalition of allies who just don't get on. You don't need a brilliant master of military art like Zhukov, Rommel, Patton or Montgomery. You need a soft-spoken diplomat who can somehow weld hopelessly dispirited and divided forces into a successful coalition and keep it functioning. That's why I said Eisenhower (tactically not very bright but a genius at holding a coalition together), Alexander (ditto), or best of all, the slow, patient, determined and extraordinarily successful Slim. I don't believe that Zhukov was tested in such a circumstance. Rommel certainly was though, and it wasn't his strong suit.

The biggest joke here is that all America needs in order to resolve one of the trickiest conflicts of our generation is one single military mastermind - to boot, one that the entire American state apparatus has so far managed to overlook, but who will be easily 'discovered' by a real estate mogul.

I don't understand how anyone beyond the age of puberty could be impressed by this kind of rhetoric, as opposed to just finding it cringeworthy and embarrassing. If Trump is a non-moron, he's hiding it very well.

^ The reason they've overlooked it, David, is that the Donald hasn't started the war yet. I don't think he'll get the chance, to be honest. There's usually a crazy horse bolting out in front at this stage of the US presidential race. Though it has to be said that It's usually gaffes that bring the horse to grief, and Trump is rewriting some rules. Strange days.

The election is more than 12 months away. Patience here is a virtue.

Hillary is more likely to be in Jail in 12 months than the Democrat nominee.

^ Can anyone explain what this whole email scandal is about? That Clinton might be corrupt would not surprise me one bit, but I'm struggling to get my head around this particular issue.

Trump is manna from heaven for the democrats. The early polls putting Saunders ahead are from states that are not all that relevant currently. Time is the issue. To many people are prematurely predicting what might happen. No one will vote for a president who is Jewish and a socialist Jew at that.

It will be easy to negatively campaign against Trump - his disgraceful Atlanta bankruptcies will catch up with him.

Shame there's no Jon Stewart anymore

There was a theory they wouldn't vote for a black with an arab name. The reality is in the USA if they don't like the nominee they just don't vote . But the jews will vote.Had they had that here it is doubtful that Abbott would have got in. Mind you if they had non cumpulsory voting in Australia and held it on Melbourne Cup day Ricky Muir would be Prime Minister

^ Good point. He'd certainly have been a much better one than Abbott.
