Post subject: Travis Varcoe trade: mid year report | |
|
It's early days but 11 matches in, it seems the Pies are doing well out of the Clark/Varcoe/Lumumba trade. Initially concerned that the Pies may have been the loser out of the deal. I guess with Clark being still injury prone and still vulnerable to his depression and Heretier being solid but still turning it over in a panic, Varcoe is the rd 11 winner.
He is quick, efficient by foot and stronger at the contest than I initially envisaged he would be. hey he has put 3 people in hospital this year including: Rockliff and Brodie Smith!

Varcoe will be as good if not better than The Krak was for us. I thought Sunday was his best game for us so far. _________________ You can keep your Locketts. There was only ONE Gordon Coventry! |

He is fast and skilful and, frankly, much, much harder at the contest than I thought. There have been quite a few matches where his repeated efforts at the contest have set the tone, whether or not he actually went on to star in those games.
There is a place in my heart for the H that played for Collingwood until about mid-2011 but Varcoe is twice the player the later-model H turned out to be. And he's almost a year younger than H, so I think we win that one comfortably. Not sure about where to place Clark, since he didn't opt to come to Collingwood. He's a great talent and will probably win Geelong some games on his own but I think keeping the money for an out-and-out star was the better decision. |

In a young group experience in big games is one thing we lack and Varcoe brought that to the club in spades.
You can just see that the youngsters like him already and respect him and the way he celebrated that goal on Sunday showed he's really enjoying being here too.
He has commented that he needed a change, he's got it and it's working out well for everyone involved. |

You are asking me where you place Clark he didn't opt to come to Collingwood about? Do you think I should know place Clark he didn't opt to come to Collingwood about ? |

At the half way point we have been big winners in our trades.
Varcoe has been a welcome surprise. He adds experience, professionalism, speed, judgement & skill. He was well developed at Geelong.
I would have loved to have picked up Clarke but he chose to be out of the limelight - a correct decision in the end for him. Clarke would have been a huge bonus to our fwd line notwithstanding the better efforts of White this year.
After a bit of understandably tricky start to the season he looks to be enjoying himself. As M123 noted, his experience has added value to the trade & the team. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Interesting perspective; I'd of thought they play entirely different roles, and don't really have a thing in common, except for their race.
Was really surprised to read Varcoe is young than H, seems to of been playing for donkeys years.
When he has his head in the game he is a weapon, but I think he looses his concentration a bit at times _________________ "The last thing he expected WAS THE FIRST THING HE GOT!!!!!"

I don't have to watch Harry grab the ball, run straight in to an opponent, the handball to an opponent under pressure, or alternatively, bomb it long to no-one anymore. That's a win in itself.
That Varcoe has been very solid so far this season is just icing on the cake |

Opportunity to see Varcoe on Sunday and thought he really stood out with his one touch footy, good speed and hard it, always had the feeling that the ball in his hand would next be with another Pies player.
Good year so far. _________________ There is Collingwood and then the rest. |

Varcoe is far above the current version of H as I stated early in the season this was a good trade for us - Varcoe is a few years younger and can play with the skill and poise our club needs!
Mid-season Varcoe gets a B - not exceptional but good and getting better as you would expect in a new team. _________________ Love us or Hate us... we are Collingwood - you can't ignore the Mighty Magpies!!! |

He has been the perfect fit for a young list still learning the caper. I know for a fact he was much loved as a quality person at the cats.
He has never been particularly consistant over his career but his best is very influential during a game. Good things happen with ball in hand. |

That is why we did not try and get a Pick for Lumumba as we needed more Leadership and Maturity at the Club _________________ I am Da Man |

Not that it matters greatly, in the scheme of things, but I believe (from looking it up earlier today) that Varcoe is about 18 months younger than H. Your point is still a good one, though.
According to this link, when they played against each other in round 10, H was 28 years, 205 days old and Varcoe was 27 years, 59 days: http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2015/041120150608.html |
