Couldn't help myself tonight with the AFL Hall of Fame dinner and once again perused the list of legends thus far. Happy for Plugger to be included; one of the best I've ever seen. But can someone explain to me how two Collingwood icons continually get overlooked?
I'm talking of Bob Rose and Syd Coventry. And I'll back them against two players who have already received the legend status.
Darrell Baldock was no doubt a clever player, but let's compare him to Rose:
Games - Baldock 119, Rose 152
Goals - B 237, R 214
Premierships - B 1, Rose 1
Brownlow - B 2nd, R 2nd
B&F - B 3, Rose 4
Leading goalkicker - B 3, R 1 (premiership season)
Baldock coached 62 games for 18 wins, Rose 252 with 115 wins.
If Baldock deserves legend status, it's high time Bobby Rose - the epitome of good sportsmanship as well - was elevated.
Now compare Coventry's record to Roy Cazaly
Games - Cazaly 198, Coventry 227
Goals - Cazaly 167, Coventry 62
Premierships - Cazaly 0, Coventry 4 (captain 1927-30)
Brownlow - Cazaly 0, Coventry 1 (1927)
B&F - Cazaly 2, Coventry 2
Is it just me, or does it seem that Cazaly got his spot based more on the legend of a catch-cry over pure football talent and application?
Time for this injustice to end. The next AFL legend must be one of these two Collingwood heroes. _________________ Explain it to me like I'm a four year old. Ted Whitten is an AFL legend, and Bob Rose isn't? |

I agree, the pies are under-populated in this stuff. We dominated the game in the late 20's and 30's, but have no players recognised for it. We also had one of the greats in bob rose, who gets overlooked time and again. _________________ I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. |

Imagine if Plugger had come to Collingwood and they didn't elevate him to legend status. I imagine they'd keep putting it off and justifying it by saying "His time will come" |

Never forget the day when Plugger left Saints and was driving to Vic Park to sign with the Pies only to be told that the board had a change on mind!!!! I believe it was lead by Thommo ( happy to be corrected ) who refused to take him in..... can only imagine what could have been!!!!!
The best player I have ever seen in my time (since the mid 70's to now) by a long long way. _________________ There is Collingwood and then the rest. |

Plugger:1995-1999, 2002 Total Games for Sydney 98. Total Goals 462. Could've done with that in the bleak mid-late 90s. |

The story I heard was that it Wayne (or Max?) Richardson who voted against Plugger because they earmarked the FF position for Mark. |

There has been a few debates over the week about the induction of modern day players, such as Lockett, being inducted over older player from yester year.
I don't believe it's limited to 'they were Collingwood players', but rather players from the 50's, 60's and 70's not being inducted. |

27 legends? HUH?
There's no average fan who could name all 27 of them, so guess what, they aren't legends.
To me the term legend only applies to the absolute best of the game, those that changed and shaped the game.
Only 9-10 of those, 27 and adding one every few years is over kill. |
