What beat us in 2011 was Pods getting injured forcing Geelong to go to plan B. We were beaten by their plan B.

JW you have an interesting view about being painted into a corner old son.

The board was going to sack his arse until Eddie came out in support of him, and it was only the 'oh-so-horrible' succession plan that gave him a chance to coach a winning flag team.

Just go back into VFL / AFL history and find out how many senior coaches were allowed to muddle through for as long as Mick was without the ultimate success.

The only one who painted Mick into a corner was Mick.

If the board were out to sack him and he knew it perhaps he was further in the corner than you think. And that's not to defend his reactions, rather just to understand them

Btw, 4 gf appearances during his tenure is hardly muddling your way to ultimate success, more like bordering on it for quite a number of years.

BTW 4 gf failures leave a mark of inadequacy - it doesn't matter whether you or I like it or not senior coaches are judged on ultimate results.

Collingwood has a long history of ALMOST and that was never going to be good enough in the long term.

He was given carte blanche for a decade and failed until he was forced to recruit properly.

Look its not opinion its openly documented fact.

As for his reactions, they haven't changed since he played for Richmond. He was a thug - and a sneaky one at that - on the field. So when push came to shove he turned snake, just like he did on the field.

Those of us who witnessed his onfield career as a player were certainly not surpised at his behaviour in the least.

Sorry, I don't share the same sentiment.

I enjoyed watching the pies be competitive and in the hunt for over a decade under his watch. I enjoyed going to the football for a large portion of this time and I enjoyed achieving ultimate success in 2010. I enjoyed his tenure and I wish him all the best.

As for the bolded bit. The only fact i see is that the above is my opinion.

What are you on about mate?
What's this business about failing for a decade til he was forced to recruit properly?
And as far as his playing pedigree goes. He was a dirty back pocket player like Sheedy. No dirtier than Lethal or Clarko. All the thugs make the best coaches.

What a load of nonsense. A grand total of 2 out of our 22 premiership players were recruited after the succession plan was announced.

And while some slightly more credible critics might argue that he wouldn't have gone for recycled players if he hadn't felt his window of opportunity was closing, I've never seen any actual evidence that this was the case. What club wouldn't have taken a player of Luke Ball's stature for nothing? Also, weren't we crying out for a ruckman of Darren Jolly's stature for years?

But the more important point is this: the other 20 premiership players recruited under Malthouse's watch from 2008 and before (when he was just coasting, according to you), included players like Nick Maxwell, Alan Toovey, Harry O'Brien, Dane Swan, Tyson Goldsack, Leigh Brown and a number of others that rival clubs passed on and Malthouse put faith in, sometimes to howls of derision from Collingwood fans on these very boards. Actual history—not your weird interpretation of it—is clear on this point: to the extent that he had any say in the process, Malthouse was an excellent recruiter, and built a powerful team with only a small handful of obvious out and out champions.

Only prejudice and spite could lead someone to try to discredit these obvious achievements.

perfectly summarised. A remarkable record of success in his time as Pies coach - four GF appearances in ~ 12 years, and regular finals wins in several of the other years. he usually got the best out of the resources he had, and gave us a great sight for our money, including a precious flag -one of only two in the last 60-odd years. Don't like the man, have to admire the record.

Agree. I also enjoyed the hunt through the 00s.

And you all need to remember in 99 we were a complete rabble. In just 2 years we were a goal off a flag. To build that in 2 years after a decade of complete Shitness, is a credit.

MM is a legend of the game. I'd have him back at the pies tomorrow. Very happy with Bucks at the helm though. He's our past and future.

.

Is it though? He's a stubborn old bastard, was never keen on recycled players, and yet it's widely recognised that without ball and especially Jolly, we would not have won in 2010.

I cried for tarks, for Fraser, but with them in the team instead, we lose. We don't even make the grand final.
