One option is that both would be delisted and redrafted as rookies in November, enabling the Pies to open up two spots on the 2016 senior list.

Backdated bans would allow them to return for the 2017 pre-season competition.

The scenarios were presented to Keeffe, 25, and Thomas, 23, at a meeting at the Toorak home of Collingwood president Eddie McGuire three weeks ago.

McGuire did not guarantee the pair would remain at the club, but told them there was some hope.

Player agent Tim Hazell, who manages Keeffe and Thomas, said the McGuire meeting was “really open and really honest”.

“They felt better having spoken to Eddie,” Hazell said.

I guess we'll wait and see.

Go the Pies!

Hearing Bucks and Pert and Eddie saying these guys are a Good Blokes.

Has made me think we could keep both of them.

Though would’t there Punishments need to be Back-Dated as you can’t Draft players that are Suspended for Drugs?

I find it hard to believe that the club will retain them.

Even if the club accepts that they took the PED unintentionally, it's still a big stain on the club's reputation.

I don't know what to make of it but I can't see it happening if they receive bans.

Plenty of "nice guys" have been delisted and plenty more will. At the end of the day it's a cut throat business and the Pies will make the call if they feel Keeffe and Thomas are able to offer something after their bans are served. The emergence of our young high draft pick mids is a bit of a worry for Josh. As for Keeffe, he could be useful hanging onto. He will be 27 by the time he's even able to play footy at any level again, but certainly a handy player to have around especially in a year where we're presumably going to be contenders and depth is crucial. And especially after this ordeal, you'd think they would be happy to play for peanuts which helps us fund other contracts.

Finishing their careers in disgrace pretty much qualifies them for a career in the footy media. Just ask Carey and Campbell Brown. Wink

Side by Side - does the Club kick our kids out onto the streets when they err from the 'straight and narrow', or, as a family, do we support and guide them by hoping they learn from their experiences .. that's all I want to say.

depends on who "we" are. if it is the club, i'd say they have a duty of care to ensure the fellas get through this with as little damage to their welfare as practicable. if it supporters, well, clearly the opinions and attitudes are divided. i am pleased there is a small glimmer of hope for them. if this year's draft is as weak as has been suggested then having ready made players available to us might be a good thing to consider.

Needed to further qualify .... does the Club kick our kids out onto the streets when they err from the 'straight and narrow', or, as a family, do we support and guide them by hoping they learn from their experiences .. I support their rehabilitation if achievable.
