Why the term "shithouse" did not occur to me while posting the above, I cannot imagine. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Ahem: Try
All about Eve, the films of Billy Wilder & Joseph Mankiewicz, the Petrified Forest, The Long Weekend, The Marx brothers, WC fields, Robert Altman, Raging Bull, The Godfather, 2001, just to mention a few. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Have you ever seen Altman's 3 Women, WPT? Strange film, but probably my favourite of his. Wasn't sure what to think of Short Cuts.
2001: A Space Odyssey is great, obviously. Can't imagine any Hollywood producers having the balls to fund something like that nowadays. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Really like Robert Altman films in the main: Loved "The Player" & "Welcome back to the 5 & dime, Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean" or something like that. Don't think I've seen his film "3 women".
I remember liking "Shortcuts" but saw it more than 25 years ago! _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

You lost me when you mentioned All about Eve as if it was good! I like most movies of that era - well, quite a lot of them. OK, some - but this tedious and hysterical nonsense would come pretty close to the bottom of any list.
Never heard of or heard just enough not to be interested in Wilder (not-very-good commedian, if I am thinking of the right bloke), Mankiewicz (who?), the Petrified Forest (nice title, is the movie any good?), The Long Weekend (never heard of it), Marx brothers & WC fields (classic comedy in its time, but not something you'd actually watch. Well, not more than once), Robert Altman (who?), the Raging Bull, & Godfather (nasty bullshit with nothing much to recommend it bar the fact that most of Hollywood's crap is even worse, mostly much worse/
That leaves 2001, which is generally grossly overrated but certainly worth watching.
Hmmm .... one decent out of eleven. That's a 90% failure rate, WPT. Back to school for you, ol' son. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Sure, HAL. After all, compared to the average Hollywood producer, you are an intellectual giant. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

I'm no expert on classic Hollywood (and to be honest, the golden era doesn't really interest me nearly as much as post-war European cinema), but Billy Wilder's films are generally worth watchingThe Lost Weekend is one of the best films about alcoholism, and The Apartment is a supposedly comic, but actually kind of moving exploration of gender power dynamics and casual sex from a time when such things were rarely discussed in American cinema. As for Altman, surely you've at least seen M*A*S*H (the film, not the TV spin-off), right?
Agree with you on The Godfather and Raging Bull (Coppola and Scorsese are two of the most overrated of the New Hollywood directors, imho), though, and I couldn't sit through much of Duck Soup (which is supposedly the Marx Brothers' greatest film). Pretty naff, and you can hardly excuse that on grounds of vintage when hilarious films like My Man Godfrey were being made in the same decade.

Just going to throw a few more modern ones in for consideration, mainly some of Eastwood's later work.
Million dollar baby
Gran Turismo
Unforgiven
All pretty damn good movies that don't find the normal genre I enjoy. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Yeah, Eastwood's stuff is always pretty solid. Even Tannin might like those films! _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
