Bingo!! That worked.

Great news about him wanting to finish his career at Collingwood. He will go down as a legend of our club.

COLLINGWOOD captain Scott Pendlebury has revealed he underwent a shoulder reconstruction at the end of last season to fix an injury similar to Gary Ablett’s.

In an exclusive interview with the Sunday Herald Sun, Pendlebury revealed his surprise at being told by surgeons his right shoulder injury was much worse than expected, blowing out his likely recovery period from two to six months over summer.

But, following a sensational start to the season, the five-time All-Australian has laid the platform for an early contract extension at Collingwood, allaying any fears about his unrestricted free agency status next season.

The champion onballer comes out of contract next season and would attract mega offers in excess of $1 million a season if he tested the market like Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield.

But, in a major boost for the Pies, Pendlebury, 27, told the Sunday Herald Sun he was intent on playing out his career at the Westpac Centre, saying “I’m happy here, absolutely”.

“We’ve got a great group, I can see this group doing good things in the future and clearly I want to be part of it,” Pendelbury said.

Pendlebury said he and Gold Coast superstar Ablett had recently discussed whether they were “too safe” with the initial phases of their recovery periods, with Ablett still up to one month away from returning after a premature comeback in Round 1 embarrassingly backfired.

“For both of us it was new, we had not really dealt with it (shoulder surgery) before,” Pendlebury said.

“It’s almost like we are both pretty disciplined and like to do things to the ‘enth’ degree but it was almost the undoing because we were both almost a bit too safe.

“When you have (shoulder) surgery you have to be pretty aggressive with it. But we didn’t know that. We were a bit cautious.”

Pendlebury increased his rehab program after an initial five week check-up, forcing the three-time best and fairest winner to lift broomsticks and exercise with bands from the balconies of his coastline villas on his off-season European holiday.

Pendlebury said the reconstruction news was a shock, after playing in pain in the back half of last season.

“I went in just for exploratory surgery, or just a clean-up of my AC joint, but (the surgeons) said I had a split in my labrum, so they fixed it anyway,” he said.

“And then I came out and it was a posterior reco and we had to just go through the processes and figure out what that meant, because I wasn’t expecting it.”

The gun left-footer said while the overall recovery had gone to plan, he faced significant challenges returning to the field in the second preseason game, describing his comeback performance as “horrendous”.

“The first time I hung back on the chin-up bar, it just feels like you are ripping everything, just stretching, from your lat to under your shoulder,” he said.

“It just felt weird again sticking your arm out and having to tackle and I guess confronting those mental demons. I felt better in the third Nab game then I think in Round 1 I was ready to go.”

It was well known that he had some "cleanup" surgery on the thing (he said as much when he appeared on The Footy Show during the finals in a sling), but I think the point of the article was to point out that he actually had a proper reconstruction, a salient detail which was kept secret at the time.
