This is a war that has to happen and the Taxi industry has brought this on themselves. I use both and I am fed up with Taxi’s as none of the drivers know where anything is. I need an interpreter when catching a Taxi. Now the Taxi owners who have spent millions on licences have had it to go for too long. They own multiple licences and have made millions over the years whilst exploiting workers as they simply employ cheap labour. The so called training taxi drivers get is laughable and the state of Taxi’s are a disgrace. When I use UBER they are nice cars and the driver knows where to go and no cash changes hands.

The quick way to fix UBER and the Taxi industry, is drop the cost of a Taxi licence so Joe Bloggs can by a Licence and a Car and not leave the monopoly on the greedy few. This sounds Socialism in the Taxi industry; I should approach the Greens.

It's interesting and promises to get more so. No doubt that the Taxi industry needs a shake up, but Uber operates on the fringe of legality as they don't comply with any of the regulations that taxi companies have to comply with.

Uber and AirBnB are two good examples of the modern economy and how the taxation system needs a massive reform. The people who make the investment and employ people, paying wages, tax etc are being undercut by people who do none of that.

Going to be a very interesting next few years as the government(s) struggle to keep pace with how technology is enabling changes in how society and business is done.

I feel a bit sorry for taxi drivers given how hard it is already to get enough customers to get by, but I don't see anything wrong in theory with people negotiating a private fare.

Considering that the taxi companies were resorting to 'rape' ads when this was first being floated, I'm guessing they still don't have a very strong argument against it.

Uber black is OK, but I'm not paying someone to drive me around who isn't registered as a vehicle to carry passengers. If the driver has an accident and you're injured, you're on your own.

There's not a lot of negotiation in it, the company sets the fare.

A court case against an Uber driver has effectively rendered Uber illegal in Victoria.

http://www.news.com.au/national/victoria/uber-melbourne-ride-sharing-service-effectively-illegal-as-driver-guilty-in-landmark-case/news-story/d262aab399caab1fc8f9e24ff687dfb4

I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing or just the start of a big compromise.

Has anyone here actually used Uber?

I haven't. I also haven't used cabs much this year, last time was coming home from Tulla after Vegas.

I have heard a friend has had a very good experience with Uber in Melbourne, he swears by them as he uses them a lot apparently. I'm not even sure if they're operating in Tasmania, if they were operating in Sunshine when I was there it would have been interesting to have seen how much differently my trip back to a friends place would have been.

I've not needed a taxi in a long time, so I am not sure what the difference in services would be but some of the taxi's that I had during my stay in Melbourne were pretty woeful.

Yeah there's some woeful ones, some utterly fkn crap ones, some good ones and a very small few really good ones.

The variation is the biggest problem.

Taxis are carp.

Uber is a massive tax-dodging, uninsured ripoff by a huge multi-national company. It is not legal and should not be allowed to operate.

The fact that the taxi industry is carp carp carp is not relevant to the illegality of Uber, nor the exploitation it embodies, nor the massive tax avoidance which is the only reason it exists.

1: Fix the taxi industry.

2: Enforce the law. (No need to ban Uber, it's already illegal, just enforce the law properly.)

I know there's a lot of grievances towards the taxi industry and certainly the industry needs to be fixed but I still prefer taking a taxi (whenever I need to) over using Uber.

The reviews of people using Uber have been full of large praise but I've never trusted relying on someone who doesn't have proper legal authority to carry passengers hence it would take heavy persuasion from others to convince me otherwise.
