it appears a fait accompli that the substitue will no longer exist from next season. it's be nice if it was abolished now but i can't see that happening. in conjunction with the abolition of the substitute will be reduction in the permissible interchange rotations from 120 to 80. that number is only a best guess and has been bandied about in the media.

my question is, what affect will this have on the game, how it is played and the players required to play it?

i think the club is as well positioned as any to be able to adapt to the changes. i can only really comment on what i know of our players but it seems we have been assembling a squad that is versatile with many having elite running endurance. nearly all our players can play a secondary role and this versatility will provide flexibility with how our midfield can look. our midfield will bat at least 10-12 deep with players being rotated through the forwards and backs.

as many have pointed out we have a gazillion half back flankers and i don't think this is by accident. nearly all of them can run all day and they have the better foot skills of our group. they will also present additional avenues to goal. they will be critical to our success.

as for the game itself and how it will evolve with the changes who really knows. contested ball, two way running and quick transition will continue to be the key. this will kill less fit and prepared teams.

It will also see a spike in exhaustion related soft tissue injuries if the clubs don't watch it.

today i heard kb on the radio saying he wants to see players huffing and puffing at the end of a game. i don't think players struggling to get to a contest is all that exciting. if people are worried about poor skills now just wait til players have no energy.

What is the point of having 32 players on the ball all day?
I would severely limit the rotations and we will have more
one on ones, more big marks and an open and flowing game.
Bring it on!

That's the joke of the rule, they want to slow the game down by making the players tired. If they are fricking tired they don't go for the hanger.

They wanted to speed the game up and now they want to slow it down. Laughable.

Yeah, am I one of the few people around who preferred the game when there was unrestricted rotations and no substitute rule? So exactly what has the AFL achieved with the sub rule and the reduction in interchange rotations? We now have more injuries in the game, more congested footy and more emphasis on gut running midfielders with fewer skills. And new players are introduced via the substitute rule, who sit on the bench for three quarters and spend the fourth quarter adjusting to the tempo of the game when the siren goes to end the game.

Scrap the sub rule and make a rule that if you go off, you have to stay off for a minimum of 3 minutes.

That way you do not have to worry about the number of rotations.

Coaches would be more sparing knowing that a player must stay off for 3 minutes.

Any measure that allows us to get rid of the sub rule has my support. The only question is why we had to put up with this charade for five years when nobody wanted it in the first place.

KB is spot on.
It's a big reason i go to the footy each week. Seeing guys huffing & puffing is so much more awesome then seeing them drill passes on to the chests of leading forwards. Lets get rid of mark of the day & goal of the day & replace them with heave of the day & cramp of the day. Wow just imagine the bums on seats that would bring. Wink

I actually think KB makes a fair point (can't believe I just said that). Survival of the fittest... last man standing and all that. Does nothing for you?

I like this idea, maybe they could use the chairs from The Voice.

As soon as you go off, you sit in the chair, hit the button and it turns around locking you in the dug out where water/Gatorade are available and trainers/doctors have access to you.
The coach can talk directly to the player by video link before spinning back around after 3 minutes.

Players wont be more tired as they will simply stay off the ground for longer when the rotations are capped at a lower amount.

120 minutes game time / 120 rotations = 1 minute bench time

120 minutes game time / 80 rotations = 1minute 30 sec bench time

That's just a simplistic equation obviously but you get the idea.

too simplistic. less players will be afforded a spell because there are less opportunities available to go to the bench. 40 less opportunities no matter how long they are off for. this is why it will be important for our mids to be able to rotate through the forward line. our forwards and backs, in particular, are going to need to have greater endurance because they will get rotated less.
