I like this bit....
He said there was also an element of “self-absorbtion” that led people to believe their ideas were so important they had to be shared.
“On one level we’ve gotta get over ourselves. We’re entitled to have an opinion but we shouldn’t shout down people without have a reasoned argument.”
Hmmmm

It makes no difference; the "reasoned arguments" are also merely emotional reactions dressed up as rationality.
What's worse? Sophisticated deceit or blind emotion? It's all BS.
The only interesting thing is where this state-of-affairs leads. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

Poststructuralism high score!
Personally, I believe that civil debate, even if founded on erroneous or damaging views, is always preferable to vitriol.
At least we agree that abuse is pointless and counterproductive. Where we disagree is that I believe polite and respectful exchanges always serve positive social functions, just one of which is opening a channel and providing a learning opportunity. That applies whether you're debating an eminent scientist or a member of the KKK. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Even then, unless people see themselves as "allies" they are only politely entertaining nonsense under the threat of not being popular, or the hope of somehow proselytising the other person.
One-on-one, people are much saner. But put us in a group or in public (which is what the online context is), and we become complete baboons and frauds.
Public discourse is always advertising; it's the church mission fields of communication. Why else would we bother with it? _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

Your right.
If it's a notion Rupert Murdoch wants to push (ie...those preaching hate and intolerance are the real victims), there is no escaping it.
btb...
as far as I'm concerned it takes 2 to tango
but only 1. to run home complaining that the other sides refuses to dance to the Right (sanctioned) tune.
... swearing and finger-pointing as they go!
I myself was recently of accused of "aggressive and intimidating posting" for using the words "pompous, born to rule and Manifest Destiny" in one sentence!
(I'm truly sorry, I can only guess at the pain my words must have caused!)
btb..
Rupert runs his news-papers at a lose (as a Tax dodge).
We Australian's have given news CORP billions in tax right-offs over the last year or several.
In his rags he pushes the idea that the Age of Entitlement is over for government hand-outs.
He's like the witches in MacBeth spinning lies and 1/2 truths into a tangled knot and fore-casting rosey futures for all that follow their advice!
... All the while racking in our taxes in with a metaphorical croupiers stick.
Taking a NEWS Corp story seriously?
Yikes! |

i take very few news corp media seriously. for some time i had been waiting for us to catch up with the tripe that passes for media and journalism that exists in the states and the uk. we have finally arrived. i understand that there is a principle articles should be written so a twelve can read comprehend them but i am convinced twelve year olds write the stuff. these people probably consider themselves as journalists. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |
