The fact that Brodie is only 21 is the best news I've had for a week.

Well said. How many kids are carrying a senior AFL ruck division when they are 19 & 20?
He has massive upside still to come.

Most Rucks that age are in the State League Reserves

Fraser was a better ruck and ground player than Brodie at his age.
Fraser didn't play one game in the reserves in his first years at Pieland.
Unfortunately, he was flogged by MM and the injuries mounted
and his heart seemed to get smaller as the years progressed.
It annoys me when people keep going around saying that this person
or that player is an absolute champion when all they have done so far
is NOTHING.
We have idiots saying a few of our picks of late are definite AA players!
It just is so stupid to carry on like that.

When Fraser was Drafted we had no Ruckman and we De-Listed Monkey.

When Grundy was Drafted we still had Jolly

They're different players though aren't they?

Josh gets sold short these days for mine as he was a very good player for a number of years but he was never a genuine ruckman imo. What he was was a very tall, mobile utility. He routinely got smashed in the hitouts but was very good around the ground and handy around goals and there weren't many ruckmen who could cover the ground as well as him in his day.

Brodie though is a rough, tough, strong genuine ruckman. He has a physical presence already, can match it for ruckwork with the best on his day and is quite mobile himself. He needs to take more contested marks (something Josh never did much) and learn to hit the scoreboard (something Josh was good at).

I agree he's not there yet but the future is bright for the kid, enjoy watching him develop.

Josh was a good leaping ruck in his first few years.
I watched an early 2000's game last month and I was amazed how
good he was.
I had forgotten how much talent he had.

He is a Case that Playing Young Rucks early might not be the Best Idea.

As Fraser Peaked Early but never quite Lived up to the Hype

Grundy is now in his 3rd year at Collingwood.
In comparison - Fraser in his 3rd year kicked 37 goals
played in all of the 25 Pie games and kicked 3 goals in
both the Pelim and GF games.
When people say he is going to be a champion it might be
wise to remember our last home grown ruckman in Fraser.
I would think most Pie supporters thought he was average.
i thought he was very good.

Yes Dave he became a shadow of his former self.
To some extent his career reminded me of Gavin Brown
Absolute champion in the first half of his career and then the injuries
just killed him.
His body was a battering ram and it didn't last the distance.

Josh was killing them and then was ruined in a state game. It is why I don't care if we ever see another one.

He had a Big Injury before that but yeah the Knee Injury in the 2008 State Game sadly killed off his Career

Anyone who thinks Fraser was a "absolute champion" is kidding themselves. In a team with Tarrant and Rocca in the key forward spots he was OK as a third tall (but not as good as, say, Caracella). His rucking skills were OK but he never imposed himself physically on a contest.

I spent 6 years waiting for Collingwood to replace him with an actual ruckman (thanks again, Darren Jolly) and I'm not going to get nostalgic now.

Brodie Grundy is twice the ruckman Fraser was (at any stage of Fraser's career).

Congrats to the lad.

I am as excited as anyone (except Dave) re Grundy's potential. However he has a long way to go to get to the status of Len, Peter or Damian. Monkhurst was a premiership ruckman at 21 and gave Simon Madden a bath in the 1990 GF. Very Happy

I was talking about Gavin Brown not Josh.
I said Josh was very good not an absolute champion.
