He lacked a little polish late (skills decline when fatigue sets in) but the attack on the ball of the little guy in your avatar was nothing short of sensational as well.
If Blair plays like he did last night more regularly then his many critics will be forced to eat humble pie.

I wish he could finish better from snaps on the run. Sprayed a few badly. Still he gave his all. |

No we won't. We will be delighted to discover that this perennial list clogger has finally turned himself into a good player. Our criticisms of his previous record of failure will, just like his record itself, remain valid.
But Blair has always played good games once in every three or four. He was excellent in that game late last year when we had an incredible number of injuries too - and guess what: just like this week's game, it was against a below-average side. When was the last time Blair stood up against a genuine quality team in a big game? It doesn't happen.
Don't get me wrong. I admire Blair and I like him, but I'm not daft enough to think he is good enough to be a key part of a premiership-quality team. He'd make a good addition to a struggling bottom-of-the-ladder club needing continuity, experience and leadership, and he provides valuable depth for a better club, but who are we kidding if we think he'd be an automatic pick at Hawthorn or Freo or Geelong or even Port?
Call me when Blair puts in great games against top four sides. Hell, call me when he puts in a good game against even one top four side.

Jarrod Blair is a good player, a real team man, would be one of the best effective assists in the comp, a great tackler reads the game well and contrary to what some say is one of the more consistent players in our team. Where he falls and frustrates a little is that he doesn't hold a mark and when its over his head and contested, 99% of the time he looses the contest. He is no long kick which makes him less effective and is not blessed with great speed and allows defenders to run away from him. While he is considered as the best option for his role I have no problems with the coaching staff selecting him. I was always hopeful Jarrod would move into the midfield and somehow I still feel that is his best position but with the evolution of the game and midfielders becoming speed merchants or big bodied 185+footballers I have changed that opinion.
Hopefully our other players and forwards around Jarrod improve, in doing so Jarrod will be a better player as he wont be out of place but will contribute to the collective as he did in 2010-12. |

turns out that there are more skills to an AFL footballer than kicking accuracy and being a big bodied mid!!! Shocking.
Toovs was great today. His disposal is never going to be elite by foot (if it was, he might be the best defensive player in the comp), but what you get from Toovs is that he treats every contest as the LAST STAND and he is rarely beaten one on one in the air or on the ground. Very reliable hands and very calm under pressure.
In time, the defense is going to be unstoppable as we'll have Langdon and Scharenberg (both elite by foot out of defense), and Williams, Sinclair and toovs as the grunt.
By the way, I think brown also needs a shout out given how lambasted he was over summer.
finally, I liked Frost in his new role. He has similar attributes to toovs. rarely beaten one on one and players really desperately.

The physical recovery time from a knee reco is anywhere between 3 and 12 months, the mental recovery time seems to be set at about 12 months after the first game back. It takes time before you develop the confidence that the joint is stable and will cope with what you need to do. |
Good post Stui and a fair assessment on the physical and mental recovery of players sustaining knee injuries.

He was great, one of the differentiators, and it was fantastic to see. It usually takes 18 months to recover completely from an ACL, and we should bear that in mind re Scharenberg.

Tooves was excellent against the bears. Still think we can't play too many poor kicks in the back line but at this stage, he gets the nod above Williams and Sinkers.

Best game for a while from Tooves… great to see him step up as a senior down back. Attack on the footy was first rate and does lift those around him… and a few watching in the crowd or at home!
Hoping the backs can settle - Brown, Frost, Langdon, Williams and Sinkers with Tooves is pretty versatile. Maybe throw in Reid eventually… The only query is Sinclair taking the kick outs… I like multiple guys taking the kicks so Sinclair can be in the mix - but quite a few bombs to the opposition ruck was a concern!
With Keefe likely to be gonski Reid is looking more like a backman again - perhaps the sweeper and also the kick out specialist?? Not much competition down back for the kick out role

Sinkers is just doing it until Scharenberg becomes our permanent kick in guy. Then you'll see Buckley type kick ins that will always find a black and white traget.

just my opinion but anyone who questions Tooves' place in the team clearly has NFI. Along with now Langdon, my only automatic selections for defence.
