Now we all know we have a PM who is a complete Fwit. His latest gaffe "I was never worried about metadata protections when I was a journalist'. Amazingly Mobile phones and the Internet was in it's infancy when he was a Journo. Embarassed

For those who really don't understand metadata. This is 1984 George Orwell stuff. Have a watch of Citizen 4 which is about Edward Snowden.

We hear the spiel if you haven't got anything to hide you don't have to worry. This is beyond that with the push by Governments running a fear campaign it's about stopping Terrorism. The smart Terrorists don't use modern communications.

The ALP's boasting that they have changed laws are laughable.

Terrible policy.... one thing Oz politicians all know and rely on is that the great unwashed don't really give a toss if it's 'a bit complex'.

It will really gain f all information about people's emails as most people use email accounts that are hosted overseas such as gmail, hotmail etc and therefore will not have their metadata captured or forwarded to the Australian government. If you are going to talk to someone just use a foreign hosted email account. The same can be done for your browsing by utilising a VPN. Feel free to correct any errors in my statement as I'm not a tech guru by any standard but I see the retention of phone call and txt data as the main area of intrusion to anybody who IS attempting to organise something illegal.

^ Is that really true about email accounts? Sounds pretty unlikely to me, but I'm no IT guru either.

But yeah, a VPN seems the way to go. How soon until the government makes that illegal?

It's the telecommunications companies job to collect the data and forward it to the government. Foreign companies providing email services are not obliged to do so.

Does anyone actually understand what the detail is or are they just protesting because it sounds bad?

The best overview I've read recently—I think you'll find it relatively even-handed and informative:

Really? Even handed and informative? Seriously? Shocked

I'll post up some real information when I have the time and inclination.

^ It's one of the few articles I've read that doesn't bag Labor, and it also points out the extent of surveillance predating these laws and the concessions that have been gained over the past few weeks (meaning that, as bad as these new laws are, they're not necessarily going to usher in an Orwellian dystopia).

Sorry, did you want an article that portrays the government in a positive light? I thought we were dealing with non-fiction. Razz
