Pretty hard to sugar coat the first 2 and half quarters. We would want to come out with a different attitude against the Bears in round 1 or we will be embarrassed.

Our defence needs to be able to combat the run and stun handball happy teams. We need a multi-option forward line and we need to make quick decisions and move the ball quickly and directly. I like the idea of Cloke patrolling HF to HB and being an additional let out contested mark from the kick in or second kick out of defence. White, Witts/Grundy or Gault can be the stay at home big forward.

A lot of the stats were relatively even given the one sided nature of the game. The Bulldogs used it much better and, I suspect, more directly.

Greenwood - half game - good and hard until the injury. let's hope it isn't serious.

Fasolo- half game - I didn't realise he was out there until I saw him in the background! Didn't get involved when Elliott went into the midfield today. Really disappointing game.

Crisp - came on in 3rd and good when he came on.

Gault - came on in 3rd and tripped over himself a bit today. can someone teach him how to put a shoe on.

Grundy - I thought he was pretty good today despite losing hitouts to Minson.

Elliott - looked good through the midfield.

Cloke - double and triple teamed all night. who was free??? See my comments above for how I'd like him used.

Sidebottom - good. lock.

Pendles - good, but looked quiet.

Swan - looked quiet, but still racked up some stats. (nowhere near 2013 form yet in my view)

Ramsey - looked good.

Oxley - looked good. he may get promoted ahead of Gault.

Goldsack - ok but possible shoulder injury? (he came back on though)

Blair - tried his guts out but needs to hit the scoreboard to keep his spot.

White - didn't click. looked like 2014.

Adams - good.

Langdon - good again. Was doing kick ins.

Frost - ok under fire.

Brown - ok under fire.

Toovey ok under fire.

Thomas - pretty good.

Sinclair - did a few things but quiet. Was doing kick ins.

Williams - ok early, but faded I thought.

Varcoe - I'm just not seeing what some see in him. I hope
i an wrong.

Who did I miss?

Coaches in the box looked shell shocked. (As I am!)

I am backing the boys to come out and announce their presence with authority (thump The Bears) in round 1. Gault, Oxley and Ramsey have put real pressure on the selectors. Round 1 side will be interesting.

PS How good was the Bont? The Dogs have a future star there.

I think you're being pretty kind to a number of players MM.
Toovey is not a shadow of the player he was. Lost a yard and looks lost.
Sinclair did the kicking in and advantaged the Dogs. He either kicked long to where we were outnumbered or just kicked to a contest.
Thomas is B grade at best. Possessions don't hurt the opposition.
Fasolo par for the course. Should have traded him.
White is pretty ordinary isn't he? Soft as. Really shouldn't get a game on that showing.
None of this surprises me as these blokes have been struggling for a while.

Liked Langdon's and Oxley's games. At least they put the ball to our advantage and by that I mean within cooee of a black and white jumper.
Adams tried his guts out.
Pendles is beginning to find his mojo.
Ditto Swan.
Sidey got plenty of it but was somehow ineffective.
Marley was one of the few players who gave a yelp early.
Can't find many more positives.

Dave, the mods on here and that includes Donny have given you more room than anyone else ever. You've learned from the feedback and they've adapted to you. FFS you have a whole board named after you, the DTM forum. Stop sooking.

Did you see White duck his head when going
for a mark in the last quarter?

dave, it can get mich worse than this. if this happens in the season proper this board will implode if it hasn't already done so by tomorrow morning and all of melbourne will know about it. things can get much, much worse.

I must have missed this in the first half. Ball went in circles plenty of times. What was with all the hype in the news about Pies being direct? Tipping they should STFU and demonstrate it on the field.

Well, that's a positive right there. You usually don't see White going for a mark.... Laughing

Ok I'll start with the positives:
- Marley found some run and some form tonight at last
- The Ox was good again and doesn't waste his kicks
- Pendles and Swanny started to find some touch towards the end (the end thank God)
- We escaped a pre-season without an ACL or dislocated shoulder
- Crisp made an immediate impact when he came on.

I went to the Bendigo game and also to the Wang game last year. Tonight was a cross between both of those. We seem disorganised, underdone, scrappy, slow and lazy. Tonight was an example of some of our worst 2014 football. Last week was an example of our average 2014 football. We are so frustrating to watch. There is no cohesion, no fluency, a lack or urgency and at times our reflexes, kicking and speed are sub AFL standard.

Now I know this game and last week was only practice but the trend is that we are treading water. We need to be realistic and accept there are at least five or six players in our team who can't remain in our team for us to progress when we trend up the ladder with the high draft picks.

Teams are playing on at all costs against us and it is only when they tire from all their running that we begin to turn our games into a scrappy arm wrestle and stay kind of competitive. Every team will attempt to burst out of the blocks against us. I'm sure all other coaches say the same things about us: triple team Cloke as they have no other dangerous marks, play on at all costs as they are slow and pressure the kicker because their skills are poor under pressure and we will get the ball back.

I still see no game plan to speak of. Of course there is one but as of yet we cannot implement it against any team who attacks quickly and pressures well.

To be honest this is starting to look more and more like the Shaw years.

The positive is if it all goes pear shaped I'm confident that the right coach could quickly turn things around with our list much like Port.

Making sure you select the right coach is a different matter altogether though.
