Post subject: Sheffield Shield final - Victoria v. WA in Hobart. | |
|
With the World Cup ruling out the MCG, Victoria opt to head south for season's climax
Hobart's Blundstone Arena will host the 2014-15 Bupa Sheffield Shield final, Cricket Australia has announced.
The Bushrangers finished the regular season in first place, earning the right to host the five-day final against the Western Warriors starting this Saturday.
But due to the ongoing Cricket World Cup, Victoria are unable to play at their Melbourne Cricket Ground home, instead opting to head south and across Bass Strait for the domestic season's climax.
"We have nominated Blundstone Arena as our preferred venue to host the Bupa Sheffield Shield Final," Cricket Victoria chief executive Tony Dodemaide said.
"The MCG would have been our first preference but, as is well known, the ICC Cricket World Cup requirements mean it is unavailable in this period. The Junction Oval in St Kilda will in future be our alternative first class venue in Victoria once it is redeveloped as the Victorian Cricket & Community Centre, but is not acceptable as a first-class venue in its current condition.

WA all out for 421. Ahmed took 8 wickets, Siddle the other 2. The Vics are 0/97 in reply. |

That's it ?!? Has the Aussie sport's scene gone completely off it's tiny brain ?
The final of the best domestic comp. in the World is being played in Hobart. I just got home from a day out to the Atherton Tablelands. On the way back to Cairns, I asked my brother, to turn the car radio on to the ABC.
Progress reports on an inconsequential soccer match, 5 minutes of blah, pre-match about a Rugby League match, the scores in a bloody Irish RU match, progress match scores in AFL, results of the East Malvern Blind Women's marbles championships and every other bit of dross WITHOUT even a mention of the Sheffield Shield final.
When we got back to my bro's house, we put the teev on. His unit has all the shmicko multi view apps. Went to the Sky Sports bit and, again, watched for over 10 minutes with NO mention of the SS final.
I said, "Bugger this! I'll go into Nick's".
Went to the Sports Bar and found ONE post after almost 2 days of play.
-------------------------------------
First day stumps: Adam Voges (having an amazing season) was 100 n.o. and WA was 4/310. Fawad Ahmed had 3 wickets.
Today, Ahmed took 5/20 - 8/89 for the innings. WA all out for 421. Excellent comeback by the Bushrangers.
At stumps, Chris Rogers was 79 n.o. and Rob Quiney, 48 n.o. - 0/135. _________________ Donny.

It's not like the old days, is it? I can remember going to the MCG for the New Year's game between the Vics and NSW and there were about 25,000 people there - the records in those games were known and the memories of star Shield performers revered.
Similarly, I remember - at a later time - watching Jim Higgs trying to spin the Vics to an unlikely win against NSW. It was on the TV and many of us were transfixed. It's a long time ago but I think NSW finished 9 for 90-odd, with Gilmour coming out to bat with a bad leg and facing the last few balls to stave off the defeat.
Anyway, closer to the present time, the Vics are 3/288 at stumps on day 3. Handscomb is 16 not out and Stoinis is 43 not out. Earlier, Rogers made 112, Quiney made a very slow 69 (not that the speed of the knock matters in a Shield Final, if you are hosting) and David Hussey made 33. The openers put on a 185 run opening stand.
This is a 5-day match, so more careful batting (or bad weather) tomorrow can probably clinch the Shield.

Stoinis didn't get going again after his not out overnight. He was out for 47 and then Wade went for a first-ball duck. Agar got both and now has 3 wickets. After stumbling to 5/299 early, the Vics are consolidating at 5/323, with Handscomb on 36 and Christian on 11. |

Victoria is now 7/352. Hanscomb was out, caught and bowled by Rimmington, for 48 and Christian just went, bowled by Tye for 27. The Vics trail WA's first innings target by 69, at the moment. |

Vics 8/359 at lunch on day 4, still 62 runs behind WA's first innings total.
No rain forecast for today or tomorrow, so it would be good if the Vics hung around for a while after lunch, at least. Boland and Pattinson at the crease, Ahmed to come. |

Boland out for 7, lbw to Rimmington. Vics now 9/377 (trailing by 44), Ahmed to join Pattinson, now. |

Vics all out for 381. Rimmington wrapped up the tail with 3 late wickets.
And so, from 3/299 to all out 381. Not quite a collapse but it suggests that batting on this pitch is getting harder and harder as the game progresses. WA must now play something approaching 20/20 cricket for the rest of the day and set a target for the Vics that gives them time to get the 10 wickets. |

WA are 1/123 after 29 overs. Bancroft just out caught Quiney, bowled Siddle for 38. But he wasn't doing the damage (strike rate of 43) - Harris at the other end has a near-enough to a run-a-ball 80. Klinger has just joined him.
At this rate, with 24 overs to go today, WA will lead by about 250 (perhaps a few more, especially if they step up the pace) at stumps. The Vics need to slow them up or get them out. |

WA have picked up the pace. They are 1/179 with a little under 14 over to go. Their lead is presently 219 and should be about 300 at stumps, unless something dramatic happens. They are giving themselves a chance to bowl the Vics out tomorrow, if their bowlers are good enough. |

And that's stumps. WA 2/240 with Harris on 129 from 134 balls and Voges 15 from 17. The Vics had a generally poor day all round - they went from 3 for 288 overnight to add less than 200 for their last seven wickets and then let WA race away to set up something for their bowlers to protect.
This time yesterday, the Shield looked likely to go to the Vics. This evening, I'm not sure. It will be a fascinating last day. |
