American Bulldog. Big strong boy, would be stronger if he wasn't being basically starved atm.
Backstory : Daughters BF is an apprentice diesel mechanic. Some bloke dropped the dog off and left it there where he works.
5 years old, unhealthy, but actually quite friendly in certain situations. Daughters BF liked the dog, his dad said NO. So, daughter goes to work on me. We go over to check it out this morning, not in my top 5 choices of dogs but pleasantly surprised at the response I got from him. Dog clicked with me straight away.
So bought him home to see how he and my old German Shepherd would cope with each other. Definition of ungood. I took the big bloke into the park on the lead while daughter went through house and bought our dog into the park through the side gate. Interesting. Old bloke took one look and went "that aint for me" and headed off to piss on trees. The Big boy took one look at another dog and suddenly showed a different side to his personality. He was up and about, and went straight at the old boy with intent. This wasn't wanting to play, this was wanting to attack. Now, I'd anticipated that and had the lead wrapped around my wrist but even though he's undernourished, 50kg of sheer anger gives your arm a jollt. I said to the daughter, from the way he reacted to the sight of another dog, he's either been taught to fight or he's never been taught not to fight.
After a brief dust up, the old boy was sent back in the back yard and the big boy was on his way back to where I got him.
He has a great personality provided your an adult male. He responded to me like we'd known each other for years. When I got my daughter to hold his lead for 5 minutes, she said "He's a mans dog". He basically fresh aired her and tried to drag her looking for me.
So. Would be a great dog if you had no other dogs and (I'm surmising) no small kids.
I really liked him but couldn't take him so, at this stage my son is going to check him out. He has cats, foxes in the area and a dumb GF. I reckon the big boy could clean up all of those issues..

As cold as it my sound try not to get your son to take him. It will be a liability & a millstone. My daughters ex did the same with exactly the same type of dog. Beautiful dog but too dangerous to be social & was a liability for what they could do & couldn't (going out etc).
Then there's the vet bills, the dog food ..... _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

That's not cold, it's practical.
The boy is living in a place where the dog could work, and he's in a situation where him and the dog could be good for each other, so I'm prepared to encourage the union and play it by ear. |

Sounds like a good dog, just not socialized. Get that British Dominatrix dog woman in to sort him out . I'm going to be getting an English Mastiff myself. I like the big brute dogs, but prefer them mellow. I'd like an intruder/thief to think twice but I don't want the postie getting his throat torn out. |

Wonder what the poor thing has been through? Stui, not your son. Get him to a specialised rescue group, one for bulldog type dogs. He needs to learn to trust again, nice that you tried, but best decision for your old dog. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

American Bullies are actually damn good dogs for someone with the time and strength to be their pack leader. A friend has one she often calls her 40kg lapdog, he's a brute but a softie.
You were obviously not prepared to let your old dog and the bullie to sort it over a week or so and if your son is OK with the dog like you said they'll probably good for each other. |

Wouldn't have taken a week or so, the bullie would have killed my old dog within minutes let alone hours. he went straight for the throat, lucky I was strong enough to haul him off. |

They're a powerful breed that's for sure, if you weren't comfortable or confident you could handle him it's best not to keep him. |

Just for context, this isn't him but gives those who don't know an idea what they look like.

they are gorgeous, and as 99% of dogs, friendly, but they need to be socialized the right way. all dogs do. but especially big strong dogs, because a dog this size can easily kill an adult. you did the right thing, your old dog should have priority. I looked at rescuing another dog, as I know Max doesn't have long, and I don't want his baby, Molly to be lonely. but Max does not appreciate other dogs around (ive had a couple of lost dogs here that found me, and then i found their homes for em!) so Max can live out his life without that stress.

If I had a baby who looked like that, I'd be sending him back to the pound as well! _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
