Post subject: A heart felt thanks to The Millane FamilyReply with quote

My daily look on Collingwood website revealed a beautifull story
As the 25th anniversary of the 1990 premiership looms the Millane
family have presented the ball Darren held aloft at final siren
A cotier group had it byt gave it to the Millane family in 1991 after the funeral
She will be presenting it officialy at the celebration
Darrens mother said it would be nice if my boy was there but he will be there in spirit
For only the 2nd time since that grand final has she met the 1990 team
To the Milliane family thank you and i know Darren has never been missing
He is with all of us always
R.I.P mate

I think they should seriously consider asking the club to unretire No.42.

It's been 25 years and what better than having a living tribute running around on the field in it. I don't know their feelings about it but seeing the No.42 again on the field would send shivers up my spine.

Nice of them to give the ball to the museum which I believe will be part of the new social club complex, which is rapidly taking shape by the way.

Regarding the jumper, the Millane family have been resistant to any move by the club to resurrect the No.42 jumper. But I have a cunning plan. Perhaps it could be unretired under special circumstances. Much like Presti's No.35 going to the club's No.1 draft pick, perhaps the No.42 could be worn by the Darren Millane Perpetual Trophy award-winner for a year. This way, the jumper remains an icon, but it gets to be worn every year in Darren's name. I think this would make the jumper even more special.

Imagine Mrs Millane, not only presenting the Darren Millane Trophy, as she does every year, but also presenting the number 42! There wouldn't be a dry eye in the house......well at least from those of us who were there in 1990!

Yeah I like that Neil. It would make wearing the jumper a superb honour and to have that locker for a year and get your name permanently on it under the great mans would be highly sought after. It would show the entire AFL community that you are a courageous person too. Like wearing a bloody superman suit!

I really don't think Pants would have wanted his number retired. I think he would want us to move on. If it is given to someone they must keep it and forge their own identity. Nice gesture though by his Mum. That footy belongs to all of us.

Can you visualise Indiana Jones lurking outside the cabinet, with his bag of sand in one hand, trying to evaluate the weight, before he nabs it?

A guy called Daicos made the No.35 famous.

It rankles me the decision Ed made regarding it in the wake of our premiership win.

It was his "coach for life" moment and it was an emotional and dumb call.

Just like the number 35 I would very much like to see the number 42 running around the MCG on a regular basis.

Perhaps it should be made the captains number.

For mine after 24 years reviving the number is the best way to keep the memory of Millane alive for future generations.

I like this idea too. I think it's time for the 42 to return (previously, I thought it should stay retired, but the 2 ideas put up on here should be looked at) Cool
