Post subject: Help Required from any old blokes out there (1965 question) | |
|
Does anyone have a footy record from 1965, I want to know what jumper number Bob Farmer wore? AFL Tables has it listed as 11 however Ken Turner wore 11 that year.
Also #3 and #29 one has to be Kevin Rose, which one and who wore the other one?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I clearly remember Kevin Rose as wearing No.29 but on this list it says he wore No.3 - could be true - but in 1966 he was back to N0.29.

Guernsey numbers 1, 2 and 3 were traditionally worn by the captain vice captain and deputy vice captain in those days.
The first to break with tradition was Ray Shaw, captain in 1979, and father of our Michael Tuck Medalist. He kept his number 23. Interesting how Shaws have had a big say in our history over the years.

I'm hoping the link works, as it is from a footy record of 1965. The State Library of Victoria has digitised versions of every round since the Footy Record started back in 1912.
I often have a look through the site even way back to the mighty days of our four in a row side. The Records are a great read, even the ads are interesting!
Anyway, that page link lists two Records and one is for a Pies game. The Record lists the numbers as I stated earlier from a game v Fitzroy in Round 11, July 10 1965.
The numbers for that game are on Page 16 of that Record.
Interestingly, the the Record lists John Henderson as captain wearing number 2, and Kevin Rose as Vice Captain in 29.
Ray Gabelich is listed as number 1, but is not captain.
The State Library is a brilliant source of all sorts of stuff...

I vaguely recall him, not a great player really, and he did wear No 11 too.
