I greatly miss fishing and bird breeding (mostly Aussie parrots and finches). I was also big into reptiles and spiders, but the birds were my real joy.

I also definitely miss competition table tennis.

I still throw the baseball with Ms. PTID who is an awesome catch with the baseball glove.

But since arriving in the UK it's beer all the way, which is a bit of a lazy hobby!

What kind of guitars (electric, acoustic, Fender, Gibson etc) do you collect?

Cocktails - not the fluffy sexy rubber ducky stuff with pink umbrellas, but the classic drinks - the manhattan and variations, the various martinis, the old cubans, old fashioneds, the New Orleans historic drinks etc. The whole business of making and sharing great, classic drinks is one that never pales, for me. Stick to four a week, though !!

So what's some good ones?

I tried a Manhattan a few times this week, can take it or leave it. A Whiskey Sour though ..... Yum. I could drink that until I'm incapable of movement.

^ damn temperamental drink, the Manhattan. The bitters have to be just right for the drinker's taste (two dashes for mine, not one, not three) and I think some brands of red vermouth are better than others.

Some treasured secrets after years of experimenting ?

The whisky sour is a great drink in the standard version, but this recipe is even better, to my taste and that of many people i've fed it to :

3 parts bourbon
1 part sugar syrup, 1 part triple sec, 1 part fresh squeezed lemon juice
An egg white
Dry shake without ice (though release the pressure part way through or the shaker will tend to pop open with the pressure of the egg white frothing.
Add ice and shake hard for at least 30 secs.

The Vesper martini (from Casino Royale) is a favourite :
3 parts Gin
1 part vodka
1 part Lillet blanc
Shake briefly with ice, and garnish with a strip of lemon peel, expressing the oils of the lemon over the top of the drink

Finally, my most prized recipe after years of experimentation. If I tell you this I'll have to kill you (though it is in the Savoy cocktail book)
1.5 oz gin
1.5 oz Lillet Blanc
Teaspoon of Amaretto (you can vary that slightly to taste, but i'd say a full teaspoon is max, half A spoon is more to my taste)
Two dashes of orange bitters
A twist of orange expressed over the top of the drink and dropped in the glass.

A few others that i'd highly recommend, and the recipes are available on the web (a guy called Robert Hess has a pretty encyclopeadic set of youtube videos) showing how to make them

The Last Word
The old Cuban
The vieux Carre (more of an after dinner drink, than an aperitif).

Good luck !

If you try any of them, let me know how they hit you. And remember the great Dorothy Parker's deathless quip:

I like to drink a martini
Two at the very most
Three, I'm under the table
And four, I'm under the host.

I went through a stage where I would have those after work on the way home. I thought they were amazing! And then I totally went off them. Kahlua is just too sweet for me nowadays. I still like Baileys, though. Smile

Thanks for chatting, like a sacrificial offering to assuage the British entertainment industry's collective guilt and shame for turning a blind eye to or condoning such behaviour on a widespread basis for the past half-century.
